‘Why is Prince Andrew relying on dodgy deal cut by paedo instead of clearing his name?’ – Polly Hudson

Prince Andrew appears to believe his best defence to sexual assault allegations is to rely on a shameful deal cut between the late paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein and his young victim Virginia Giuffre, writes Polly Hudson

The FBI are still looking to question Prince Andrew, who is a “person of interest” in their investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell

Imagine looking in the mirror – even a gilded one, in a palace – and trying to meet your own eye, knowing the best defence to accusations against you is a dodgy deal, done without your knowledge, by a paedophile.

Even if you deny all these accusation and claim complete innocence.

That’s where Prince Andrew finds himself today. And you thought your return to post-festive real life in January was tough

How can he feel good – or even just OK – about relying this exploitative agreement, between Virginia Giuffre, a poor young women who had been groomed, abused and shamefully used, and Jeffrey Epstein?

“If Prince Andrew really has no involvement here, why isn’t he pulling out all the stops to let everyone know?”

The 2009 contract dictates that that Giuffre won’t “sue anyone connected to Epstein who could be described as a potential defendant”, which is vague to say the least. But why has it even come to this anyway? Wouldn’t any decent man want his name cleared fair and square rather than depending on such a shady deal?

In fact, doesn’t logic dictate that if any of us were accused of anything we hadn’t done – even if it wasn’t that serious, never mind playing a part in sex abuse – that we’d be fully co-operating with the investigation, desperate to prove our innocence?

If Prince Andrew really has no involvement here, apart from the friendship and sleepovers with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein that he admits, why isn’t he pulling out all the stops to let everyone know?

Instead the FBI says Andrew has ignored numerous requests to be questioned. He’s now involved in a civil case with Ms Giuffre, who he insists he cannot recall ever meeting despite photographic evidence that he did.

He told Emily Matliss that he was incapable of sweating, at odds with Giuffre’s description of him “sweating profusely” as they danced together at a London nightclub, however his lawyers now admit there is no evidence to support this.

They have also revealed that there are no witnesses able to corroborate his Pizza Express Woking alibi.

This year is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years on the throne. Seven decades of service, duty, and loyalty. It should be a time of joy and celebration, probably much needed and anticipated by the relatively new widow. But as the old saying goes, a mother is only as happy as her unhappiest child…
