As many of us look forward to taking advantage of the brighter, warmer weather to come with spring and British Summer Time in 2022, Easter is another popular occasion to look forward to.
When do the clocks move forward in 2022? The date and time clocks change in the UK, and…
The Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ after his crucifixion in Jerusalem has been observed for centuries, with traditions gradually changing over the decades.
In the 21st century, Christians around the world celebrate Easter by exchanging chocolate Easter eggs, attending mass on Easter Sunday, and indulging in temptations given up during Lent.
But the Easter holidays also offer an ideal time to travel abroad, with warmer temperatures and relaxed coronavirus restrictions expected this spring.
This is when Easter and its bank holiday will fall this year, and when Lent will begin in 2022.
When does Lent start in 2022?
Lent for the year 2022 will begin on Wednesday, March 2 and end on Thursday, April 14 with Holy Thursday evening mass.
The 40-day observed festival makes many Christians around the world decide to give something up during Lent to pay homage to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ in the days leading up to his death and resurrection.
Traditionally, Christians fasted or observed abstinence during the 40 days of Lent, repenting and reflecting on their sins, as well as resisting temptation, as Jesus did during his 40 days of fasting and praying in the desert before he died on the cross. , according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke.
Lent begins on the day known as Ash Wednesday, which is still commonly observed in the Western world with priests marking Mass-goers’ foreheads with ashes in the shape of a cross while reciting the saying: “Remember that you are dust, and to you will return to dust”.
These ashes are derived from the burning of palm leaves used in the Palm Sunday rites of the previous year.
This year’s Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent will fall on Wednesday, March 2, 2022.
Its final week, known as Holy Week, begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Maundy or Holy Thursday, followed by Good Friday.
The end of Lent on Holy Thursday is followed by Good Friday, on which Christians often exchange hot cross loaves to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus by the Romans following his sentence by Pontius Pilate.
When is Easter 2022?
Easter Sunday will fall on Sunday, April 17, 2022.
The Sunday holiday dedicated to the Easter celebrations can take place at any time between March 22 and April 25 according to lunar patterns and the church calendar.
Easter can be celebrated between March 22 and April 25 due to a set of calculations based on observations of the moon using the Church’s ecclesiastical calendar.
A Christian holiday, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus, Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday following the first full moon – Paschal – which occurs on or after the vernal equinox.
The spring equinox is when the day and night have the same duration and occurs every year and is set on March 21 in the ecclesiastical calendar, although this differs from the astronomical date.
In 2021, the first full moon after the spring equinox is scheduled for Sunday, March 28, which means Easter will be celebrated on Sunday, April 4.
Why is Easter so late in 2022?
Since Easter Sunday falls on Sunday, April 4, 2021, this year’s Easter Sunday, April 17, will be held later than usual.
This is due to the fact that it falls on the first Sunday following the first ecclesiastical full moon (known as ‘Paschal’) after the vernal equinox.
This year’s Easter Sunday is the last one to have fallen on the Western Gregorian calendar in three years, having fallen on April 21, 2019.
In 1943, however, Easter Sunday did not arrive until Sunday, April 25, since the last ecclesiastical full moon that preceded Easter did not occur until Saturday, March 20.
Only in 2038, 16 years from now and 95 years from Easter 1943, will we see Easter Sunday again this late.
But the dates of Easter can also differ depending on whether you worship according to the Gregorian calendar or the Julian calendar, used by Eastern Orthodox Christians.
The 13-day gap between these two calendars means the dates can differ wildly, with Eastern (Julian) Easter Sunday falling on Sunday, April 24, 2022.
When is the Easter bridge in 2022?
After Easter Sunday, many Britons will be able to enjoy a day off on the Easter bank holiday, which falls on the Monday after Easter Sunday.
This means that in 2022, the Easter bridge will fall on Monday, April 18.
In some areas of Scotland, such as Edinburgh, children may already be on holiday during this period.
But for pupils in England, many of whom are due to return to school on April 18, they will get an extra day off for the Easter Monday bank holiday.
By contrast, Good Friday, which is celebrated as part of the extended Easter weekend, is only observed as a bank holiday in Scotland.
