We simulated Manchester United vs Southampton to get a score prediction

Manchester United will look to bounce back from their draw against Burnley and break into the top four this weekend, as they host Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.

A frustrating 1-1 draw away to Burnley on Tuesday night saw United miss out on a chance to break into the top four and open a gap between themselves and West Ham in the Premier League table, in a game where the Reds saw two first- half goals ruled out by VAR.

With the draw immediately following United’s early exit from the FA Cup to Middlesborough just four days prior, Ralf Rangnick’s side will now have the chance to redeem themselves against an in-form Southampton.

The Saints have earned four points in their last two games against Man City and Spurs, with Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side drawing 1-1 with City and coming from two goals behind to beat Spurs 3-2. Eric Bailly, Nemanja Matic and Fred are all ruled out of Saturday’s clash at Old Trafford, with the latter still in isolation having tested positive for Covid-19.

Alex Telles could return to the squad after his isolation period came to an end, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to be brought back into the starting XI after dropping to the bench against Burnley.

So, what line-ups will both teams select? And, what could the final score be?

We used FIFA 22 to get a score prediction for United vs Southampton on Saturday and this is what happened…

We predict that United could set up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their line-up as follows: De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Maguire, Telles; Fernandes, McTominay, Pogba; Rashford, Ronaldo, Sancho.

We predict that the Saints could set up in a 4-2-2-2 formation, with their line-up as follows: Forster; Livramento, Bednarek, Salisu, Walker-Peters; Ward-Prowse, Romeu; Armstrong, Elyounoussi; Adams, Broja.

Southampton started slowly, allowing Man United to control possession and create some good chances in the first half, the best falling to Paul Pogba on the 20-minute mark.

The Frenchman fizzed a ball out to Telles on the left and continued his run into the box, and at the last moment, he darted to the near post to meet Telles’ cross, only to have his goalbound effort blocked on the line.

Rangnick’s side ended up ruing their missed chances though, as an error at the back gifted the Saints an opening goal.

A long ball sent forward towards Diogo Dalot saw the full-back attempt to head it back to De Gea from about 20 yards out from goal, and his weak attempt was read by Adam Armstrong. The substitute used his pace to peel away from Harry Maguire and intercept the pass, and the forward volleyed past De Gea into the near corner to give the Saints a surprise lead.

The Saints then piled on the misery for United, with Che Adams finding the net to make it 2-0 just minutes after the first.

Stuart Armstrong received the ball on the right and sat a driven cross into the box, and Adams was on hand to glance at a header across goal and into the bottom corner of the net.

The game seemed to be out of reach of United, but Paul Pogba managed to give the Old Trafford faithful hope when he pulled a goal back with 10 minutes to go.

As Hassenhuttl’s side pushed up the pitch, Pogba read the situation and beat the high line being played by the Saints, latching on to Jadon Sancho’s through ball, and curling around the ‘keeper to half the deficit.

All of a sudden, United had the momentum and as the chances started to flow, they found their equalizer with a couple of minutes remaining through, who else, Cristiano Ronaldo.

After Fraser Forster produced a magnificent save to deny Ronaldo and concedes a corner, the 36-year-old beat the ‘keeper from the resulting set-piece, leaping highest in the box to head in-between Forster and a man on the line to level the scoring.

Anthony Elanga had the chance to find the winner at the death, but his volley from Sancho’s cross was sent into the side netting, and the points were shared.
