We simulated Man City v Manchester United to get a score prediction for Manchester derby

Manchester City will host the second Manchester derby of the season on Sunday afternoon, as Manchester United visit the Etihad in the Premier League.

City go into the Manchester derby knowing that they can’t afford to drop any more points in their Premier League title run-in, particularly with Liverpool on their tail. For United, a victory will keep them in fourth place for the time being, although Arsenal have two games in hand over Rangnick’s side in the fight for Champions League qualification.

The last meeting between the two rivals saw City breeze to a routine victory at Old Trafford in what was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s penultimate game as United boss. Bernardo Silva added to Eric Bailly’s early own goal to hand City a 2-0 victory against United.

City have been handed a huge blow ahead of the derby, with defender Ruben Dias ruled out of Sunday’s clash. Fellow defender Nathan Ake will also be missing, meaning it looks likely John Stones could partner Aymeric Laporte in defense.

Edinson Cavani is set to return to the United squad after weeks out with a groin problem, with Rangnick verifying his return on Sunday. The German manager said: “Today was his second session of him. He looks good, so I think he could at least be part of the group for Sunday.”

United could also welcome Scott McTominay back to the squad for the clash with City. The midfielder has missed United’s past two games through illness. So, what line-ups will both teams select? And, what could the final score be?

Man City vs Man United score predicted by simulation

We used kick-off mode in FIFA 22, but didn’t select a team to control, we then selected the teams and watched the match play out by itself, to give us a score prediction.

We predict that City could set up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their line-up as follows: ANDderson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Cancelo; De Bruyne, Rodri, Gundogan; Mahrez, Silva, Foden.

We predict that United could set up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their line-up as follows: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Varane, Shaw; McTominay, Fred, Pogba; Sancho, Ronaldo, Fernandes.

City took full control of the game from kick-off, with United having limited possession. Despite their dominance, it took 20 minutes for the first shot, with David De Gea denying Riyad Mahrez from close range.

City continued to build on their possession as the game went on, creating a handful of good chances with De Gea keeping United in the game as he has done all season. United’s resilience couldn’t hold out until half-time though, with Ilkay Gundogan scoring just before the break.

The goal came with a stroke of luck, with the German tapping into an empty net from close range. De Bruyne picked up the ball on the corner of the box and arrowed a fierce effort at goal, but his effort rattled the post after flying past the outstretched De Gea.

The rebound fell to the feet of Gundogan who was unmarked inside the box. The German composed himself and tapped into the empty net to send City into half time with a 1-0 lead.

United had their best chance of the game just after the restart, but Ederson was equal to the effort, producing an acrobatic save. The ‘keeper sprung across his goal to tip Ronaldo’s long-range effort wide of the post.

After Ronaldo’s chance, the control fell back into the hands of City. Phil Foden missed a glorious opportunity as he missed the target from six yards out, whilst De Gea was tested a couple of times with tame efforts from long range.

As the game entered the final 15 minutes, United’s task became tougher when McTominay was given a red card. The Scotsman slid in late from behind to catch Joao Cancelo, and the referee deemed the challenge to be dangerous, revealing a straight red card.

After the red card, United struggled to gain possession, whilst City failed to capitalize on being one man up. A quiet final 15 minutes saw City hold out for a vital win in their title race, whilst dealing a big blow to United’s top-four hopes.
