Police forces have confirmed the speed camera thresholds that will see you get fined if you get caught.

It comes as 74 per cent of motoring offenses are speeding crimes, according to government data.

The exact threshold has been revealed after a Freedom of Information request submitted by Riverdale Leasing, Lincolnshire Live reports.

Data compiled by the company showed out of the 21 responses it received, 57 per cent of police forces advised the threshold for speed cameras is 10 per cent plus 2 mph.

Other authorities explained that officers use their discretion, or that the information could not be disclosed to the public.

Government research also reveals that over half of British drivers (55 per cent) speed at any given time, on average, Coventry Live reports.

Drivers are most likely to break the law in 20mph zones, with a huge nine in 10 drivers found speeding on these roads.

This may be because 20mph roads are often quieter, or drivers have not realized that the lower limit is in effect.

However, the 20mph limit is usually in place for school zones where children are crossing, making it extremely dangerous if you choose to speed.

Roads with a 30mph limit also have more people speeding on them than not; the government statistics show that three in five drivers (62 per cent) break the limit in these zones.

Last year, a speed reduction officer and former cop wanted to set the record straight on the things we actually “know” about speed cameras.

Speaking to North Wales Live, Gareth Thomas, a Go Safe Casualty Reduction Officer, has explained how speed cameras work, the truth behind some of the most popular myths and claims – and how you can avoid being caught speeding.

He said: “I decided after retiring that I wanted to make the roads as safe as they can be in this area.

“The aim of cameras is to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

“Go Safe prefers to educate drivers rather than punish them with fines and penalty points.”

When it came to the 10 per cent rule he says you will not get a ticket provided your speed does not exceed the limit by more than 10 per cent.

However, Go Safe say thresholds vary and can change without notice.

Officially, any speeding offense occurs at 1mph above the limit, but most forces will allow a variance.
