The demonstration called by the educational platform Somescola has defended the Catalan school model after the latest court rulings, which force several schools to teach at least 25% of their classes in Spanish.

Civil and political sovereignty has responded to the call for the Somescola educational platform filling this Saturday the Passeig de Sant Joan in Barcelona with more than 35,000 people. They have championed language immersion and the Catalan school model after the latest court rulings.

The demonstration has been called against the sentences that oblige several schools to teach at least 25% of their classes in Spanish, under the motto “Now and always, the school in Catalan” (Now and always, the school in Catalan). It was attended by the president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, the president of the Parliament, Laura Borràs, the former president of the Generalitat Quim Torra and the main leaders of ERC, JxCat, the CUP and En Comú Podem, as well as fifty entities grouped in Somescola, among which is Òmnium Cultural.

The president of the Generalitat has warned of “the offensive of Spanish nationalism, which wants to use Catalan schools” to undermine social cohesion in the community in order to “scratch four votes, not in Catalonia, but outside.”

For his part, Borràs has affirmed that the Spanish State “does not dominate the language of diversity and wealth” because it only dominates “the one of the imposition”.

In addition, Jordi Sànchez has summoned this Saturday the president of the PP, Pablo Casado, to withdraw “his threats and his lies” about the Catalan school, a message also shared by En Comú Podem, which through its parliamentary leader, Jéssica Albiach, has denounced “the lies and barbarities” of the popular leader.

ERC spokesperson, Marta Vilalta, has assured that the Catalan school is “the main consensus of the country”, and has accused the courts of “wanting to be teachers” and the right-wing parties of “fomenting hatred” to get “four votes.”

On the other hand, the CUP deputy in Parliament Carles Riera has warned the Government of the Generalitat that they do not serve “half measures” in defense of the Catalan school, and has asked take “firm action” in this sense.

At the beginning of the demonstration, the president of Òmnium Cultural, Jordi Cuixart, asked to “face” a “interference by the judiciary against the Catalan school model”, a “successful” model that “generates consensus and is a guarantee of social cohesion.”

In the final act, the Somescola manifesto was read, in which a call is made to “mobilize to defend the Catalan educational model”, and to shield the “country consensus” through the National Pact for the Language. The manifesto also asks “consolidate” the Catalan educational model before “the intolerable intrusion” that the sentence of the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia supposes. In addition, five renowned artists have taken the stage to perform their songs.
