However, both parties remain firm in their positions: while the workers demand to design a viability plan for the plant, the management intends to negotiate the relocations.
The address of Arcelor Mittal has delivered today to the workers of the Zumarraga plant the economic information that was requested in the meeting last Wednesday and that completes the report of a consultancy to justify the cessation of the activity of the factory.
Sources from the company and the committee have confirmed to EFE that during today’s meeting the relocation plan proposed by the company has not been negotiated, and that the two parties have maintained their positions.
The company continues with its plan and will stop rolling activity next Tuesday, while the committee has once again raised the need to design an industrial plan that maintains the activity of the Zumarraga steel factory.
In today’s meeting, the third of the open consultation period after the announcement of the partial closure of the factory, the directors of Arcelor Mittal have delivered the documentation despite the fact that “they are not legally bound”, according to sources from the multinational company. India, who have argued that with this gesture they intend to “facilitate the negotiation process.”
Meeting on Wednesday
As the president of the works council, Leo Bote, explained to EFE, each union center must now study the information received, so the next appointment with the company will be on Wednesday, and not on Monday, as established in the negotiating calendar agreed by both parts.
Bote explained that the committee has demanded the presence at the negotiation of an Arcelor Mittal executive with “decision-making power”, which was not possible on Monday, another reason why the next meeting has been postponed to Wednesday.
The committee chairman has indicated that workers have reiterated their position, which consists of demanding an industrial plan and preserving jobs, while the company intends to begin negotiating its proposal for relocations.
Arcelor Mittal’s approach consists of maintaining only the scrap metal stock in Zumarraga, in which only 8 of the 350 employees of the Gipuzkoan plant would work.
For the rest, the company plans to transfer 268 to Asturias, another 50 to plants in the Basque Country and offer early retirements to another 24.
For their part, the workers have modified their schedule of mobilizations, since they had planned a strike on the 20th, but finally the they have called off because for that day, after the stop of all the rolling mills on Tuesday, there will be hardly any activity in the Gipuzkoan factory.
That day the workers will a human chain in protest and will gather before the fourth meeting of the consultation period, which will again be held at the Zumarraga steelworks.
