These are the UK locations with the cheapest and most expensive gardener fees

While the winter chill currently keeps us all bundled up indoors, many Brits are keeping warm with thoughts of summer barbecues, parties in the sun and cookouts.

However, when spring arrives, we usually find that our gardens are in no condition to host any kind of fun in the sun. In these cases, should we go to a professional for help or roll up our sleeves and stay closed in on ourselves?

Pondering this question, Simply Paving analyzed the rates of hundreds of landscapers across the country to see where the most expensive and cheapest professional landscaping services are available.

The research found that Scarborough has the highest rates of gardeners in the UK.

In general, those who live in the Yorkshire seaside town spend an average of £400 for the daily rate of a professional gardener. This is more than double (104%) the national average daily rate for gardeners (£196).

Sourced from hamuch.com, data analyzed from gardeners’ daily rates at locations across the UK. An average price was then generated for each location, which was then used to calculate the cheapest and most expensive regions for gardeners.

Simply Paving also found that Redcar & Cleveland in the North East has the lowest professional landscaper prices in the country, averaging £77 per day.

Garden services across the UK have different cost averages

However, regional analysis tells a different story. Greater London, not Scarborough Yorkshire, stands out as the most expensive region to hire a gardener, costing an average of £249 per day.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Residents of Northern Ireland enjoy the cheapest average gardener rates in the UK, paying just £152 per day, 22% cheaper than the national average daily rate.

Simply Paving also compared the average prices of individual garden jobs across the UK, including general garden maintenance, high-pressure jet washing and paving installation for a patio or garden path.

The investigation found that garden services based in the East Midlands charge more for these popular jobs.

In particular, gardeners in this region are paid 21% more than the national average to install paving (£306). Even general garden maintenance (£62 on average) is relatively expensive in the East Midlands, priced at £11 more than the national average (£51).

The data also shows that Yorkshire & Humber is the cheapest region for garden maintenance, pressure washing and paving installation, with an average price of £40, £87 and £238, respectively.

In fact, Yorkshire & Humber is the only region in the UK to offer jet washing services for less than £100 per session.

TO simply paving The spokesperson commented: “Spring is a time to prepare our gardens for the hot weather of the summer months; for parties and barbecues under the glorious sun.

“Come spring, most people have the option of hiring a professional, doing the work themselves, or even a combination of both. A little DIY can save you quite a bit of money and allow you to shape your garden to your specific tastes, while hiring a professional gardener can help you save time and make use of their impressive gardening expertise.

“Whatever you choose, it’s always so satisfying when you turn your ragged winter garden into a stunning summer wonderland.”

Top tips to help you maintain your own garden

  • Make sure you have the right equipment for your garden: Trimming, digging and pruning becomes even more difficult without the right equipment for the job.

  • Plant low-maintenance flowers: If the thought of constantly tending to the garden is too tiring, fill your garden with flora that require minimal effort to bloom, such as lavender, geraniums, and daffodils.

  • Use soapy water to clean your patio: While pressure washing can provide a satisfactory deep clean, this cleaning method is not suitable for all types of paving slabs. Fortunately, plain soapy water is sometimes enough to remove tough stains that built up over the winter.

  • Lay paving slabs yourself: Even some of the largest landscaping jobs can be accomplished through DIY. There are many helpful resources online to guide you step by step through the process. Thanks to these, you can easily save hundreds of pounds.
