Employed adults find flexible working and a great team of colleagues to be just as important as a high salary when looking for a new job.

A study of 2,000 UK adults found that understanding bosses and good sick pay were also important factors when applying for new jobs.

Half of those surveyed see flexible working as the most important job benefit when it comes to deciding which employer to work for.

A high salary and a great team of colleagues (both 44 percent) were the other top factors.

An annual bonus was also key for workers when choosing a new position, with almost one in three looking for extra money to supplement their salary.

While more than one in twenty said a modern office was a factor, along with a fully equipped kitchen on site.

Company cars and electric charging ports were also among the priorities.

Cas Paton, CEO of online marketplace OnBuy, which carried out the research, said: “People are at the heart of everything we do, from our customers and retailers to our fantastic staff who help us thrive.

“As the research suggests, consumers rightly care about how companies treat their employees, and we believe that listening to what people really want from their jobs is critical to creating a happy workforce.

“We also believe in making people feel appreciated instead of being a cog in the machine.

“For example, giving people equity in a business is a great way to reward hard work and share success.

“When one business is successful, everyone should be successful.”

The study also found that more than a third (36 percent) of adults have left jobs in the past because they felt undervalued.

Finding a better position (42 percent), not getting paid enough (33 percent) and being overworked (31 percent) were other top reasons people had previously quit their jobs.

But nearly one in 20 (four percent) turned in their notice after getting into a physical fight with a colleague or boss.

However, two-thirds have stayed in jobs they didn’t enjoy, with nearly half (44 percent) admitting they didn’t want to deal with the stress of applying for new positions.

If people had their way, 35 percent would want a higher salary implemented at their current job, and 31 percent would want an annual bonus.

There is also strong interest in moving towards a four-day workweek, with more than a quarter expecting a better work-life balance, according to the OnePoll study.

Paton added: “For many, while the amount you earn is obviously important, there are other elements that play a huge factor in our overall satisfaction.

“Flexible working has become a huge part of our daily lives since the start of the pandemic, and it seems like it’s here to stay.

“We encourage all of our staff to ‘own the way they work’ by offering a hybrid work policy, making it easier for employees to manage their work and life routines with the option to work both in the office and at home in the hours that are most convenient for you. .”
