The same Tesco items two years apart show how much prices have risen before the pandemic

The cost of living is through the roof and if there is one place where you will notice it most, it is at the supermarket checkout.

Grocery prices have been rising for quite some time and there is growing concern that rising inflation is having a disproportionate impact on the poorest households.

It’s an issue that has been addressed by anti-poverty campaigner Jack Monroe this week after he highlighted how official inflation figures don’t reflect the impact of price increases on different income groups.

It’s a familiar story in supermarkets with cash-strapped families struggling to make ends meet.

And with fuel bills taking a hit as well, and set to rise further, choosing between eating and getting warm is becoming a real possibility for far too many people.

What does Tesco say?

The retailer responded to state that of the 50 items purchased again in 2020, 22 were on sale at the time, while the most recent store only contained one sale item.

He suggested that while the 2020 store would have been selected ‘with deals in mind’, the same cannot be said for the 2022 store as there was no flexibility to choose alternative items.

Clubcard price offers are updated regularly, which means that some items in the first store were no longer on sale this time.

A Tesco spokesman said: “There are a number of reasons why these specific items could have varied in price over time, such as special seasonal offers and regular updates to products that are available at Clubcard prices.

“The first basket was clearly chosen to include many products on sale, while the second basket contained only one product on sale. In fact, customers can easily find cheaper alternatives by checking out our latest deals and shopping across the range.
