the resistance of the neighbors who refuse to flee

The Russian offensive continues relentlessly with attacks in the center and east of the country, while the inhabitants of cities such as Kharkov, the second largest in Ukraine, they refuse to flee in a daily life broken by constant bombardment in the midst of chaos and destruction. This same Saturday a shopping center has been attacked, as well as restaurants and pharmacies. The explosions leave at least one dead and a dozen injured and the authorities are trying to control the fire that has been generated.

The center of Kharkov appears deserted in an improvised diaspora after air and ground attacks on government and army facilities, although it has also hit civilian buildings where you can see the bite of the shrapnel or the damage caused by the blast wave of the bombs. All the properties are very close to each other and in most cases they are destroyed. It is the daily life of citizens who have adapted to systematic terror.

Natalia, a Ukrainian activist and nationalist, shows a TVE crew how the headquarters of her NGO has turned out. Her organization works together with the Prosecutor’s Office in the documentation of war crimes such as the deliberate bombing of the civilian population and claims to have proof of 250 cases in Kharkov alone. Natalia defends her approach to Europe and maintains that the Russian saboteurs wanted to kill her in a calculated strategy to frighten the neighbors and allow the entry of Moscow troops.

Neighborhoods as a battlefield

Officially, the city authorities recognize that half of the two million inhabitants of Kharkov have left, and in places like Pyatyhatky, the abandonment is almost total.

In this neighborhood in the north of the city, bombings are frequent. No buildings are completely destroyed but the artillery has terrified the neighborhood into flight. Serguei is one of the few who has stayed, although he cannot live at home, because three days ago a shell entered through the roof of his living room. He says that fortunately she was in a shelter when it all happened, and she continues to live there.

Other neighbors also refuse to leave despite the hell to which they have become accustomed. This is the case of Yulia who resignedly acknowledges that she is staying with her mother in a neighborhood condemned to be a battlefield for the duration of the war.

After what Russia announced two weeks ago that it was going to concentrate its offensive on Donbas, in eastern Ukraine, the bombings of the capital and other interior areas have been repeated in recent days in retaliation for the sinking of his flagship Moskvaalthough Moscow continues to deny that enemy fire was the cause and blame it on an accidental fire.

In his daily report, the defense spokesman, ígos Konashénkov, pointed out that last night a total of 16 Ukrainian Army installations in various regions of the country were destroyed with high-precision missiles, including two rocket depots in the Mykolaiv region, in the south of the country.
