It will be an “atypical” appointment, because the EBB was already renewed a year ago, in December 2020, and the reform of the statutes was also approved then.

The PNV faces this weekend a General Assembly, the equivalent of a congress in another party, come to less, “atypical” according to the party itself, by almost two years of postponements successive due to the pandemic.

Thus, the eighth General Assembly does not include a National Assembly to appoint the president and the eight members of the Euzkadi Buru Batzar (EBB) (it was done a year ago, in December 2020) and it does not have a political presentation or a reform of the statutes, which was approved in December 2020.

The closest thing to this is the document that will be presented on Saturday with the diagnosis that the PNV makes of the challenges that have arisen in a “new world” after the pandemic. This document is the foundation of the “active listening” to Basque society that the PNV will launch after the Assembly.

That same day, it will also be announced what the new possibility of relating to the party is like, an “innovative” figure, halfway between the “jelkide” (a member of the PNV) and the voter, who will be a kind of recognized “sympathizer.”

The Assembly, whose motto is “Abian Zurekin-On the march with you”, will conclude on Sunday with the speech of the president of the EBB, Andoni Ortuzar, although this time sin la “makila” that is given to being chosen.

This Assembly should have been held a year and a half ago, but the irruption of the covid-19 pandemic caused that in April 2020 the entire internal process of renewal of leaders was postponed for the first time, although the PNV maintained the Assembly, without renewing the EBB, for July 11 and 12, 2020, which initially meant extending the period between assemblies by more than four years (the previous one was in Pamplona in February 2016).

However, the announcement of the elections for those dates, taking advantage of the fact that the first wave had just passed, entailed a new postponement to December 12 and 13 of that year.

Once again, successive pandemic waves forced the PNV to delay its conclave, although seeing how covid-19 was evolving, it decided not to postpone the renewal of the EBB and the regional executives, which were ratified by the National Assembly on December 10. 2020.

After the fifth wave of the pandemic was overcome, the PNV called it for November 27 and 28, 2021 at the Bilbao Exhibition Center (BEC) in Barakaldo, although it admitted on the eve of the celebration that “it is not a good time “due to the spike in infections.

But after two years without celebrating either the Aberri Eguna or the Alderdi Eguna, the PNV considers that with a vaccination of 90% of adults, an assembly with 600 people can be held with “security and guarantees” in a large venue such as the BEC adopting distance measurements, signposted access routes, masks and ventilation.

The electoral successes and “internal peace” that the PNV lives justify the continuity of the leaders who have made it possible, in what may be the last term of a generation that has led the party since 2004, that of Iñigo Urkullu, Andoni Ortuzar, Joseba Aurrekoetxea, Koldo Mediavilla and Aitor Esteban, all of them close to 65 when this term ends in 2024, as well as Joseba Egibar.

The meeting will begin at 9:30 am on Saturday and during the General Assembly. no political papers will be presented on this occasion, “but an enriching internal debate and a diagnosis that the EBB will share” with the jeltzales who will attend the meeting, which will be “the starting document when facing the process of listening to society”, the secretary assured of the Executive.

Also on that day, at 4:30 p.m., “a new model of interacting with the PNV will be presented, different from the traditional militancy but that will enable, whoever so wishes, to establish and maintain a quality conversation” with the leaders of the match.

The General Assembly will conclude Sunday with a political act starting at 11:30 with a representative of the EGI youth and the president of the EBB, Andoni Ortuzar.
