The confession of 17 defendants tightens the siege to the PP in its third great trial by Gürtel | Spain

The PP has verified this Tuesday how the fence tightens even more around him with the start of his third great trial by Gürtel, which puts him back on the bench of the National Court for benefiting from the plot. Throughout the first session of the oral hearing, focused on the preliminary questions phase, the lawyers of 17 defendants – including Francisco Correa, the head of the corrupt network – have shown their agreement with the prosecution’s thesis, which greatly complicates the defense of the formation. The public prosecutor asks that the popular be sentenced to the payment of more than 200,000 euros as a lucrative participant, since part of the illegal commissions were allegedly destined to pay for acts of the party.

The beginning of this third great trial of the PP by the Gürtel, focused on the plot businesses in the rich municipality of Boadilla del Monte (Madrid), has been marked by the cascade of confessions that took place in the previous weeks. Most of the sorry He sent letters to the National Court in recent months to acknowledge his participation in the corrupt network, seeking future benefits and reductions in possible penalties imposed by the court. “Indeed, I maintained a relationship with Arturo González Panero, mayor of Boadilla del Monte, and with Tomás Martín Morales, CEO of the Municipal Housing Company. I acknowledge that the facts of the indictment of the Prosecutor’s Office are true, “admitted Correa in a letter signed on November 25.

This Tuesday, almost a year after signing that document, the Gürtel leader has returned to the bench with the idea of ratifying his written words out loud – he will be able to do so during his statement as accused, scheduled for this week. The businessman has sat in the front row after arriving at the headquarters of the National Court in San Fernando de Henares (Madrid) from the Valdemoro prison, where he remains imprisoned after accumulating sentences of more than 92 years in prison for another six derived from the plot. At his side, he was accompanied by the also confessed Pablo Crespo, his number two and former Secretary of Organization of the Galician PP, and who is also currently behind bars, already sentenced to more than 73 years in other parts of the macrosummary. In this oral hearing on Boadilla, according to its brief of provisional conclusions, the Prosecutor’s Office has initially requested 76 years in prison for Correa and 64 for Crespo.

“I have been collaborating with the justice system for many years and that is what I am going to continue doing,” said Arturo González Panero, former mayor of Boadilla and known by the alias of The meatball, upon leaving the National Court. The former popular councilor is another of the defendants who has acknowledged the facts. As he explained in his confession, he allied with Correa to manipulate public contracts from the City Council and the Municipal Land and Housing Company (EMSV); to fix awards in order to benefit certain builders who paid commissions; and to distribute the millionaire bites. A money that was “distributed” later between those involved and “the PP”, since part was used to pay for advertising expenses and electoral campaigns of the conservative party: “This was done according to the indications and instructions received from the regional leadership and national of the PP ”, asserts El Albondiguilla.

In his order to open the oral trial, the investigating magistrate José de la Mata ordered 27 people to be seated on the bench. But that number has dropped. One of the defendants died before the hearing: Rafael Naranjo, former chairman of the board of directors and largest shareholder of the Sufi construction company, which joined the Sacyr group in 2005. Another has been declared incapacitated: José Galeote, 93, a councilor for 12 years in Boadilla. And, in addition, the Prosecutor’s Office and the rest of the parties have withdrawn this Tuesday the accusations against María del Carmen García, administrator of the companies linked to the plot.

In addition to Correa, Crespo and González Panero, among the confessed are also José Luis Izquierdo, the Gürtel accountant; José Ramón Blanco Balín, the plot’s tax advisor; the builders José Luis Martínez Parra, Alfonso García-Pozuelo and José Luis Ulibarri; businessman Jacobo Gordon, ex-partner of Alejandro Agag (son-in-law of José María Aznar, former president of the Government); César Tomás Martín Morales, former manager of the EMSV; and the former popular deputy Alfonso Bosch, who replaced Martín Morales at the head of the Boadilla land company. The PP has already been previously condemned on two occasions for benefiting from the plot: by Period I, where the first stage of the corrupt network was analyzed; and for box b, which he used to reform his headquarters.

The tentacles woven into the PP

Gürtel landed in Boadilla thanks to the tentacles that Correa had woven in the PP, where he had previously nested thanks to his network of contacts. This is how Martín Morales explains: “Correa contacted me so that the EMVS could provide contracts to companies that, according to what he said, helped the PP and were recommended to him by the party’s national leadership. […] He pointed out that he had received instructions from the leadership of the party, through Pío García-Escudero (then president of the PP in Madrid), to award works to Constructora Hispánica in recognition of the campaign financing that this company provided them […] Part of the money was for the party ”.

The Albondiguilla maintains a similar discourse: “At first, I was unaware of Correa’s true relevance within the PP, but soon I had the opportunity to verify that he had access to both the PP headquarters in Genoa without even needing to enter with accreditation, as well as ease of contact with the palace of La Moncloa ”. In addition, according to the former mayor, the components of the plot later shared the money from the bites with the conservative party. The instructor calculated that the training obtained an “undue benefit” of more than 200,000 euros, which was used to pay for surveys, videos, banners, mailings and acts of presentation of candidates for the elections. It was also allegedly used to pay for, among other things, the inauguration of the PP headquarters in Boadilla; a breakfast in an exclusive hotel; or an act by Esperanza Aguirre for the regional elections.
