In Spain 62 different brands of cars and SUVs have been sold so far this year, but when analyzing which are the best sellers in each province, the first place is always occupied by the same ones. Are ten marks -Seat, Peugeot, Volkswagen, Toyota, KIA, Hyundai, Renault, Dacia, Fiat y Ford- las que always appear at the top of sales, according to the data from the registration reports of ANFAC and Faconauto, the employers’ associations of vehicle manufacturers and official dealers.
The Seat vehicles, the best sellers in Spain, are the ones that are being bought the most this year in six provinces, including Madrid and Barcelona, where the Spanish company has a factory in the town of Martorell. The presence of an automobile plant sometimes influences which is the best-selling brand in that province: it also happens with Ford in Valencia -the only territory where this brand leads sales-; or with Renault in Valladolid and Palencia, although not in Seville, where the diamond brand also has a factory, but it is Peugeot that tops the list.
Nor does it happen in Zaragoza where the best seller is Fiat and not Opel; or in Pontevedra, where despite having a Citroën plant, KIA wins.
In fact, the Korean brand THAT it is the one that is repeated the most in the top positions. Its cars and SUVs are the most sold in up to 12 provinces, including Navarra and Gipuzkoa. The following table shows the three best-selling brands in each territory and the top 10 of the best-selling models so far this year, based on the information prepared by Ideauto and provided to RTVE Data by ANFAC.
If instead of brands models are analyzed, the three best sellers until November 30 in Spain are the Seat Arona, the Hyundai Tucson and the Dacia Sandero. The latter was the best-selling model in November throughout the country and it is the most purchased so far this year in up to 23 provinces, including Barcelona, Valencia and Seville.
The Dacia Sandero, a model belonging to the Renault group, is also the best-selling model in Cádiz, the third province with the newest passenger car fleet in Spain, only behind Madrid and Gipuzkoa. The acquisition of more affordable models would explain, among other factors, that the age of the vehicles in the province of Cadiz was not very high despite having the lowest GDP per capita in Spain, according to the information published by RTVE.es two weeks ago on the age of passenger cars.
The pandemic does not unseat the three best-selling brands
Seat, Peugeot and Volkswagen vehicles are the best sellers in Spain so far this year. One out of every four cars and SUVs purchased until November is from one of these three brands, the same ones that already topped the rankings for 2019, before the pandemic, and for 2020.
Toyota, for its part, has climbed to fourth place, ousting Renault, which has now fallen to seventh place; and BMW and Audi -high-end brands- have become among the ten best-selling brands.
