Strictly: John and Johannes reveal what winning would mean

Strictly Come Dancing host Tess Daly dropped a shocking piece of information during last night’s final – Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice weren’t the highest scorers of the series despite winning.

Just before finalists and runners up John Whaite and Johannes Radebe performed a Rumba to Sting’s Shape Of My Heart – their first routine of the night – Tess let it slip it was actually the show’s first all male couple who had the highest scores.

Winners Rose and Giovanni did have the most 10s in 2021, but they didn’t quite match up with John and Johannes for highest average score.

John and Johannes made history as the first same-sex couple on the show

They had topped the standings three times as they went into the final, but while the winners had an average score of 34.38, John and Johannes had an average of 34.92.

Both couples managed to score an impressive 119 out of 120 in the final, which meant that Strictly’s first male couple remained the highest scorers of 2021 even though they didn’t win.

Rose actually had the lowest average score of the three celebs that were intended to be in final, with AJ Odudu having an average of 34.62.

AJ was forced to withdraw just 24 hours before the final after getting an injury during rehearsals that left her unable to walk without a crutch.

John won second prize alongside dance partner Johannes Radebe

John and Johannes excelled when it came to Latin dancing, although Rose and Giovanni triumphed in the area of ballroom as they boasted a much superior score.

2021 isn’t the first time that the couple with the highest score didn’t end up winning in the final, the same thing happened with last year’s series.

Bill Bailey and professional partner Oti Mabuse managed to win the series, but it was EastEnders star Maisie Smith and dance partner Gorka Marquez that had the highest average score of 2020.

It seems it’s not unusual for a high score to not mean a guaranteed win as the top three highest scoring couples of all time – Ashley Roberts and Pasha Kovalev, Natalie Gumede and Artem Chigvintsev and Danny Mac and Oti Mabuse – never managed to win the final either.

John and Johannes blew viewers away

Johannes has said that dancing with John this series has brought him closer to his mum.

The 34-year-old’s historic role as half of the show’s first male same-sex duo to take the Strictly stage gave him the opportunity to have an open conversation with her.

OK! reported that when speaking about the show’s impact on his relationship with his mother, Johannes said: “My mum’s relationship with me has improved, and it’s improved because of this partnership. For that, I’ve won.

“When I told her about the partnership she said, ‘Oh you’re dancing with a man?’ I replied, ‘Yes mum, I’m dancing with a man and his name is John.

“There was an awkward silence and she said, ‘Ok…’ Like everyone else, she waited to see how it was going to play out because she’s such a traditionalist.”
