Sporting Lisbon 0-5 Man City highlights and reaction as Blues run riot in Champions League

Manchester City ran riot in Lisbon against Sporting to take a fine 5-0 lead back to the Etihad in the Champions League last-16 first leg.

City were without three key players as Kyle Walker is suspended, while Jack Grealish and Gabriel Jesus did not travel due to injury. Zack Steffen was also missing from the traveling squad, along with the injured Cole Palmer. Youngsters Ciaran Slicker, Luke Mbete, Romeo Lavia, James McAtee, Kayky and Liam Delap were part of a 22-man squad taken to Portugal.

With Walker suspended, Joao Cancelo started, but on the left with John Stones in the starting line up from right-back.

City took an early lead through Riyad Mahrez’s close-range finish, given after a VAR check for offside, before a sensational Bernardo Silva half-volley made it two. Phil Foden tapped in cleverly for three, and Bernardo added a fourth before half time. Bernardo thought he had a hat-trick, but saw his header ruled out for offside, before a sublime curling effort from Raheem Sterling made it five ahead of the second leg back in Manchester.

Bernardo: We were sloppy

Bernardo Silva says City were not that good in the first half of tonight’s 5-0 win…

I have told BT Sport:

“Very goo win, I think in the first half we weren’t that good to be winning 4-0, we were a bit sloppy, lost some easy balls to let them counter. We were clinical, and you need luck to score that many goals with few shots. Very happy to win 5-0 away. Good performance, especially some minutes in the first half and second half.

“Sometimes you play better than the first half and you go in 0-0. You can still improve and we can still do better.”

“I’m Portuguese, from the other side of the city because I played 12 yrs for Benfica, it was special to score in my home town and nice to start with a 5-0 game. It’s always extra motivation to come to Lisbon and play an important game.Important win, still a job to do in Manchester, we cannot relax.

“Keep going, 3-0 between than 2-0, 4-0 better than 3-0. In the CL you cannot react, if they score the next game you’re in trouble. It would have been great to score a hat -trick but two goals I’m happy.”

Player Ratings from Lisbon

Edison: Had a great view to watch some scintillating City moves, and enjoyed the luxury of his clean sheet never really being in danger. 6

Stones: The one debatable call in the lineup with Walker suspended but he showed exactly why he was in the team, marauding forwards and also adding height at set-pieces. 8

Days: Booed mercilessly from his very first touch but never looked flustered, calmly handling the Sporting attackers. As City racked up the goals, the booing largely disappeared. 7

Laporte: Kept his head when a loose pass from Rodri in the first half threatened to let Sporting into the box (and the game). He went close at the other end in the second half. 8

I cancel: A golden year continues, earning space down the left and playing some incisive passes forward – including for the fourth goal. 8

Full-time!

Sporting fans were singing defiantly in injury time, but they know their side was outclassed from start to finish tonight.

Bernardo and Riyad Mahrez were superb, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling excellent, and City in general were completely unstoppable to put one foot in the last-16.

Ugarte booked

A moment ago, Kevin De Bruyne stayed down after a strong challenge, but got back up. Now Manuel Ugarte gets a yellow card for a bad one on Ilkay Gundogan.

Sporting are getting frustrated, and City will hope that doesn’t translate into any injuries.

Youngsters warming up

James McAtee and Liam Delap are warming up on the sidelines, although a few more loose passes on the pitch may make Guardiola think again about making some subs.

You’d have to expect there will be changes soon though, and the manager brought on three youngsters at Norwich with the game won.

Meanwhile Paulinho and Sarabia are replaced by Sporting. Islam Slimani and Tabata are on.
