Dangerous weather conditions have seen schools shut for the day today in parts of the country including Derbyshire and Staffordshire – see if your school is affected

Schools across the country are shutting due to snow and treacherous weather conditions.

One of the “coldest nights of the season” hit parts of the UK last night, with temperatures dropping to as low as minus 10C (14F) and the ‘Arctic shot’ shows no signs of letting up.

The mercury fell below zero in many parts of the country, including in cities such as London.

A Met Office yellow warning for ice is in place for much of the UK on Monday after Storm Arwen wreaked havoc across much of the UK, bringing strong winds, sleet and snow.

Dangerous weather conditions have seen schools shut for the day in parts of the country including Derbyshire and Staffordshire.

See below if your child’s school is closed.

In Derbyshire some schools closed to protect students and parents from dangerous road conditions and icy pavements.

Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School (Asbourne), Highfields school (Starkholmes and Lumsdale sites), Flagg Nursery School and Eyam CE Primary School will all be closed today as a result of the weather.

Eyam CE Primary School blamed “treacherous road conditions” for its closure.

They added that the danger was on surrounding minor roads, and would therefore not be opening its doors today, Derbyshire Live reports.

Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, in Ashbourne, has blamed an “unsafe school site” and “current weather conditions” as the reason behind their closure today.

They added on their website that remote learning for years 7-10 and 12-13 will be via TEAMS for p2-4 only, and Yr11 will use the day for revision until their mock exams resume on Tuesday.

Anthony Gell school , in Matlock, has announced its closure for today.

The school announced that icy conditions on site, along with transport and access arrangements made it impossible for the school to open its doors today.

The on-site safety team will be working throughout the day to enable the school to reopen on Tuesday.

Whittington Green school, in Chesterfield, has announced its closure for today, after suffering from boiler issues and “treacherous conditions”.

A spokesperson for the school said: “Due to a boiler problem and the treacherous nature of the roads this morning we will remain closed today.

“All lessons will be delivered as per the normal timetable via Teams for Years 8-11.

“Year 7 will have work sent via email. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

Other schools across the county have delayed their opening times to allow students extra time to make their commute, including:

• Youlgrave, All Saints C of E Primary School – opening 10am
• New Mills School – opening 11am
• Holmesdale infant school – opening 10.30am
• Stoney Middleton CE primary school – opening 10am
• Great Hucklow CE primary school – opening 10am
• Peak Forest CE primary school – opening 10am
• Monyash C of E primary school – opening 10am.

North Staffordshire has seen snow and freezing temperatures cause havoc over the weekend, Stoke on Trent Live reports.

And the disruption looks set to continue as a number of schools have already announced they will stay closed on Monday.

Staffordshire County Council has confirmed its gritters will be out on the roads as a result of the adverse conditions.

Eccleshall’s Walton Hall Academy has announced it is closed.

A spokesperson said: “Following a risk assessment of the vast school site, unfortunately we have taken the decision to close due to the amount of ice and snow on the paths and school drive and the length of time that this will take to clear.

“We do apologise for any inconvenience caused. We will update parents, taxis and staff through the school messaging systems.”

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Rugeley has also closed.

A spokesperson said: “Following a risk assessment the paths and roads in and around the school are unsafe due to snow and ice. We will be open as normal tomorrow.”

Nottinghamshire has seen snowy conditions and freezing temperatures as Storm Arwen hit the county and could also see school closures.

Springfield School , on Leek’s Springfield Road, will also be closed today.

A spokesperson said: “Unfortunately we have had to make the difficult decision to close today, we are unable to make the school site safe for pedestrians and vehicles.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will update parents/carers using the text message system.”
