Sabina returns to the stage with Leiva





The legendary Joaquín Sabina has returned to the tables at the 2022 Goya Awards gala after two years of absence. Accompanied by his partner and friend Leiva on guitar, the man from Jaén performed one of his classics, an acoustic version of So young and so old and he has also done so on his 73rd birthday, just two years after the serious fall that led him to cancel what was his last concert to date.

This Saturday’s has been an intimate performance full of complicit looks between the two composers. Leiva, who won the Goya for Best Original Song in 2018 for The call, started standing on the guitar. She followed him after Sabina’s broken voice, from a chair next to her. The singer he hasn’t left his seat until the end of the songwhen he has recited out loud and with a smile the phrase “for the moment, no goodbye, guys”which predicts that this will not be the last time we see him.

A few months ago, however, Sabina assured that she would not return to the stage “as long as people are wearing a mask or can’t get up. I’m afraid it won’t be for at least a year and a half.” I’d come back, said “to say hello and goodbye”Like in your song. However, she has made an exception tonight.

Two years after his serious fall

The last time the singer-songwriter was heard on stage was on February 12, 2020 at the Wizink Center in Madrid, in a duo concert with Joan Manuel Serrat. Shortly after the start of the show, Sabina tripped and fell into the security pit from a height of almost two meters, receiving a strong blow for which he had to be operated on for an intracranial hematoma. Shortly after her fall, Sabina returned to the stage in a wheelchair to say goodbye to her audience and end the performance. She was going to resume in May, but the pandemic changed the singer’s plans.

Dressed in a black striped suit and hat, it was the first time in her career that Sabina has enlivened Spanish movie night with her music. Beside him has been her partner and friend Leiva, who won the award for Best Original Song at the 2018 gala for The call. Both artists have collaborated and shared the stage on multiple occasions. Their last project together was launched a year ago, game by gamea tribute to their team, their Atlético de Madrid.

“So young and so old, like a Rolling Stone”, Sabina has sung holding her partner’s shoulder while smiling at the camera to finish saying: “Long live Spanish cinema” to much applause from the public.
