The Christmas break is often filled with parties, eating loads of delicious food and exchanging gifts.

But the festive season also brings with it some downtime where you can catch up with your favourite TV shows.

And like the rest of us, it seems the royals also love nothing better than settling down in front of the box for a night in front of the TV.

But what do they like to watch? Well, from the Duchess of Cambridge to Prince Harry and the Queen, we reveal some of their favourite shows…

Downton Abbey

Period drama Downton Abbey attracted millions of fans during its six seasons – and one of those is reportedly the Queen.

According to the Telegraph, Her Majesty is a huge fan of the show, even though she loves to point out any of its historical inaccuracies.

Brian Hoey, the author of At Home With The Queen, told the publication about a previous conversation with a member of staff at Buckingham Palace.

He said: “We were talking about Trooping the Colour and how the Queen always notices if anything is not quite right, such as one young officer she spotted wearing his medals in the wrong order not long ago.

“Apparently she is exactly the same when she is watching the television. She loves watching Downton Abbey and pointing out things they have got wrong, partly because she is familiar with Highclere Castle, where it is filmed. She used to stay there as a guest of the Carnarvon family.”

Game of Thrones

William and Kate are said to be big fans of Game of Thrones

During an appearance on BBC Radio 1, Prince William and Kate revealed they are massive fans of box sets – and one of their favourite shows is Game of Thrones.

And while on a trip to Germany, the couple met Tom Wlaschiha, who plays Jaqen H’ghar in the series, who claims they tried to press him for spoilers.

He said: “They said they really liked Game of Thrones and have watched every series.

“They wanted spoilers but I said I couldn’t tell them. I’m surprised they have time to watch such a long running series.”

Strictly Come Dancing

Strictly Come Dancing is a Saturday staple on the winter nights leading up to Christmas.

And the hit BBC show can count on at least three royals fans – including Kate.

At an event with presenter Claudia Winkleman and judge Shirley Ballas, William revealed: “I have watched the show [Strictly] a couple of times.

“Catherine is a huge fan and my mother-in-law loves it.”

Meanwhile, the other two royal devotees of the show are Sophie Wessex and Lady Louise Windsor.

They were spotted in the Strictly ballroom during the live shows in 2018, cheering on then contestants including Faye Tozer and Stacey Dooley.

According to Strictly host Tess Daly, Louise and Sophie’s trip to watch the show was all part of a special birthday treat for Louise for her 15th birthday.

Speaking to Hello!, Tess explained: “It was lovely to have them there, we are very fortunate we have a few fans in the royal household… They did absolutely [get a backstage tour].

“Lady Louise was celebrating turning 15 and she said it was a treat to come and visit the show. She’s a big fan, herself and her mother.

“They enjoyed all the action from the front row and they had a great night. It was great to welcome them.”

Line of Duty

Police drama Line of Duty had fans gripped to the screen during its sixth series earlier this year.

And of them was said to be the Queen herself, who became an avid watcher during lockdown at Windsor Castle.

Her Majesty is said to have chatted about the ins and outs of AC-12’s mission to eradicate ‘bent coppers’ with master of the household Vice-Admiral Sir Tony Johnstone-Burt, The Sunday Times reported.

A royal source told The Sunday Times: “The Queen was very into Line of Duty and enjoyed discussing the plotlines with Tony.”

Meanwhile, another royal fan is Sophie Wessex, who said she guessed who the elusive ‘H’ was before it was revealed on screen.

In an interview with Radio 5 Live, he said: “I was really disappointed in myself for having guessed it. Because I was, yes… I kept on thinking ‘It can’t be, it can’t be him but it’s got to be. There isn’t any other choice. There is no-one else that it could be’.”

Since leaving the UK for the United States, it seems Prince Harry has developed a love of a long-running American gameshow – Jeopardy.

During a chat with James Corden on the Late, Late Show, Harry revealed that the show is part of his nightly routine with Meghan Markle.

He revealed that after putting son Archie to bed, “Meg might cook a meal, might order a takeaway, go upstairs, sit in bed, turn the TV on, watch some Jeopardy, maybe a little bit of Netflix.”

Fireman Sam

Fireman Sam has been a kids classic TV show for more than 30 years – and one avid watcher was Prince George.

His dad William revealed in 2017 that George loved the show and remarked: “Fireman Sam has taken an awful lot of interest.”

But given George is now eight, maybe his days of Fireman Sam are over and he now enjoys something a little bit more grown up?
