Princess Leonor arrives at the Dalí Theatre-Museum on her first visit to Girona





princess eleanor and the infanta Sofía have arrived this Sunday at the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, in Girona, to meet with young people who participate in programs of the Princess of Girona Foundation (FPdGi), one day before the 2022 FPdGi Awards are presented in Barcelona.

Together with them are the Minister of Education and Vocational Training, Pillar Joy, and the Government delegate in Catalonia, Maria Eugènia Gay. The mayor is not there, Agnès Lladó (ERC), who has rejected the visit through a tweet this Sunday afternoon: “They don’t represent me.”

During the entrance it was possible to hear the participants in separate concentrations for and against the visit: one in favor convened by the local groups of ANC, CDR, CxRep and Êmnium, and one against by Convivencia Cívica Catalana.

Third visit to Catalonia

This Sunday will be the third visit to Catalonia by Leonor de Borbón, after those she made to Barcelona in 2019 and last year to preside with the king and queen and her sister the FPdGi Awards ceremony, of which she is honorary president.

The heiress to the throne, among whose titles is that of Princess of Girona, I had not visited this territory given the difficulties of the foundation to find a space to organize the delivery of its awards due to the veto of the City Council of the Girona capital, governed by the independentistas.

Princess Leonor’s first official visit to Catalonia amid the independence protests

The visit to the Dalí Museum, in which there will be no representative of the Generalitat, will begin with a meeting between the 16-year-old princess and her 15-year-old sister with young people who have participated in FPdGi programs this year.

Subsequently, the two they will tour the rooms of the art gallery to see some of the most outstanding paintings by the famous Catalan painter, whose works he bequeathed to the State when he died in 1989, although they are managed by the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation in the three museums in the province.

Meeting with the winners

On Monday, together with the king and queen, Leonor and Sofía de Borbón will hold in the morning the meeting with the winners of the FPdGi in previous editions in the Palacete Albéniz, residence of the Royal Family in Barcelona and in the afternoon the awards ceremony will be held in the Barcelona town of Cornellà del Llobregat.

The last time the king and queen were in Girona was in 2018, although not in the capital, where its City Council declared Felipe VI persona non grata after his speech on October 3, 2017 in which he condemned the illegal referendum in Catalonia.

On the occasion of the presence of the heiress to the throne in Girona, several constitutionalist associations have encouraged citizens to welcome him outside the Dalí Museum.

“Doña Leonor’s first visit to Girona is a gesture of democratic normality. Catalonia is her home”, maintains the Catalan Civil Society in its appeal to citizens.

In social networks, the CUP has shown its rejection to the presence of the princess and has demanded that the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation “stop being an instrument to whitewash an anti-democratic institution besieged by corruption”.
