Prince William told comedians after the Royal Variety Performance he was very relieved not to be the butt of their jokes.

The apprehensive Duke and Duchess of Cambridge enjoyed a glamorous date night at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

But William was clearly worried something would be said on stage after the royal’s challenging year.

In a difficult 2021, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey made headlines around the world.

Prince Andrew’s on-going legal law suit was also clearly off limits – and no poking fun at the Prince was decided to be the best way to go.

Funnyman Josh Widdicombe said that the Duke was pleased to escape the event, which took place last month but was broadcast tonight, without being teased.

“William mentioned he was happy that I hadn’t made any gags about him, I was worried because I had mentioned him at the start,” the comedian told Hello!

“I was delighted by that but I think he has misjudged me as a much more dangerous comic than I am.”

William donned a snazzy navy blue tuxedo for his outing with his wife as the pair dazzled on the red carpet.

Kate looked sensational in a green sequined Jenny Packham gown.

It’s the fourth time that the couple have been the royal guests of honour, having previously attended the event in 2014, 2017 and 2019.

Funds raised from the event go to people from the entertainment industry who are in need of help.

The sold-out event, held this evening at the Royal Albert Hall in London, will be hosted by comedian Alan Carr, with performances by the likes of Ed Sheeran and Sir Rod Stewart.

Body language expert and author Judi James told the Mirror she spotted some secret signs that the Duke and Duchess were loving their glitzy showbiz night out.

Judi said: “They might be more than at home wearing jeans, boots and other casual clothes but there are always some subtle body language signals that reveal William and Kate totally adore packing on the more romantic A-list glamour for formal evening events like this Royal Command Performance.

“Kate’s top-to-toe shimmering sequins and the way her hair has been styled in a swept-over cascade of curls is carried off perfectly via her very confident, elegant posture that shows the look off to perfection while William’s velvet jacket is still looking like a homage to his screen hero James Bond.

“There is an undeniable twinkle in William’s eye here that suggests an air of anticipation and excitement that has often been lacking in royal body language at these events in the past. His hand-rubbing gesture as he walks towards the theatre is a signal of enthusiasm as though he can’t wait to get in there and see the show.

“Kate also brings something fresh to her bouquet ceremony, chatting to the children with a rounded-cheek and slightly pursed lip smile that suggest undivided attention and interest in what they have to say.”
