Prince Charles has written a New Year essay, where he calls for urgent action against climate change and even highlights the work of his son Prince Harry for helping to try to build a sustainable future

Queen proud of William and Charles for taking on Philip’s role
Prince Charles has offered an olive branch to Prince Harry amid their growing rift by praising his son’s work on highlighting the impact of climate change.
In a New Year essay, Charles has issued another call for urgent action to save the environment and praised both Prince William and Harry for their work in raising awareness of the issue.
It comes after reports last month that Charles and Harry have “barely spoken” for the past eight months with claims that relations between father and son were at an “all-time low”.
Meanwhile, in her speech at the Cop26 climate change summit in Glasgow in November, the Queen name-checked both Charles and William for their work in saving the environment, but there was no mention of Harry.

However, in the essay released today in Newsweek, Charles spoke about how he was proud of both William and Harry for having “recognised the threat” of climate change.
He writes: “Most recently, my elder son, William, launched the prestigious Earthshot Prize to incentivise change and help repair our planet over the next ten years by identifying and investing in the technologies that can make a difference.

“And my younger son, Harry, has passionately highlighted the impact of climate change, especially in relation to Africa, and committed his charity to being net-zero.”
Harry and wife Meghan Markle left the UK in 2020 after a growing rift with other members of the Royal Family, including Charles and William, and they were critical of The Firm in a bombshell chat with Oprah Winfrey.
It is alleged that Charles and Harry have had only a few “fraught” conversations on the phone since Harry and Meghan moved to California.

Elsewhere in his essay, Charles warns “the eyes of our children and grandchildren are judging us” and says he hoped the start of a new year would herald a new beginning for efforts to address the climate emergency, believing “there is not a moment to lose.”
He praises his late father Prince Philip, who died aged 99 last April, for his prescient concern about the health of the planet.
The most pressing challenge now, writes the Prince, is “putting Nature, people and our singular and fragile planet at the heart of how we live, work and do business to create the brightest possible future for humanity.”
Charles said the need to “create a cleaner, safer and healthier planet for future generations” is more pressing than ever, adding: “As we enter a new year, there is not a moment to lose.”
