This image, as explained by Men’s Health , goes viral from time to time, and every time it surprises those who still do not know it. It is about Coffer’s illusion, an optical illusion created by psychologist Anthony Norcia, who was a finalist in the Contest for Best Optical Illusion of the Year in 2006 .
Its name refers to the rectangular decorative moldings that we can see on doors, friezes or ceilings. Norcia explains that illusion involves ambiguous stimuli with more than one interpretation, bombarding the individual’s visual system with information that can be resolved in different ways.
What happens is that, since in the image the lines and angles of the rectangles are more marked than the outlines of the circles, it is easier for our brain to identify the shapes of the rectangles than to see the circles.
It is something similar to what happens to us with the Rubin Cup , one of the most famous optical illusions of all time (you can see it on these lines). The image offers two interpretations for our brain, which identifies one shape with the naked eye and has to work harder to discover the second.
