Ligue 1 stars on the Premier League transfer radar

Newcastle’s January transfer window was packed with action, but that hasn’t come to fruition so far.

Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood remain the only two arrivals in the Northeast this month, as the Magpies have struggled to land many other targets for various reasons.

But with the deadline just around the corner, the club’s hierarchy is working tirelessly to make sure this month doesn’t turn into a flop.

Reports suggested the club had struck a deal to take Arsenal target Bruno Guimaraes to St. James’ Park, before being turned down by his parent club Lyon, while a sensational rumor also surfaced linking German international Thomas Muller with the Magpies.

Elsewhere, Brighton’s Dan Burn seems a likely choice at centre-back, while Armando Broja, on loan from Chelsea from Southampton, is another likely candidate to move to Tyneside.

Bruno Guimaraes

Lyon had reportedly accepted a £30m offer from Newcastle for Guimaraes this week, before the Ligue 1 side quickly released an angry statement denying the truth of the matter.

The Magpies were willing to quadruple the 24-year-old’s salary to bring him to the club, although the midfielder has been keen to hold out until the summer to secure a move to one of Europe’s elite.

However, despite being on international duty with Brazil until next week, Guimaraes has told his agents to push for a switch to the Magpies, according to the Chronicle, while the medical remains scheduled for Friday.

A new centre-back was Newcastle’s main target heading into the January window as they looked to strengthen themselves at the back after conceding the second-most goals in the league this season.

Failed attempts by Lille’s Sven Botman and Sevilla’s Diego Carlos have led the Magpies to Brighton duo Adam Webster and Dan Burn, although the latter seems more likely given Webster’s importance to the Seagulls.

However, Brighton turned down an £8m offer last week, although Newcastle are set to return with an improved offer to secure the 6-foot-7 defender’s signing, according to the Daily Mail.

Armando Broja

Coming off some impressive performances for Southampton following his season-long loan switch from Chelsea, Armando Broja has attracted plenty of interest from other clubs, including Newcastle.

The Albanian has seven goals in 21 appearances for the Saints this season and the Magpies have reportedly made a £33m offer to Chelsea to take him to St. James’ Park, according to Tuttomercatoweb.

However, this has forced Southampton to make a big money offer as well to keep the player on the south coast, meaning there will be a tug-of-war between the two clubs for the rest of the transfer window.

Thomas Muller

Newcastle have been linked with a surprising move for Thomas Muller

Perhaps one of the most scandalous transfer stories of the month, Thomas Muller has been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Newcastle and Everton said to be interested, according to the German outlet. Sport Bild .

The 33-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at Bayern Munich, having spent his entire career with the club, which has prompted the Magpies to consider their options on signing the German.

Eddie Howe’s side are ready to make a sensational offer for the striker, although Bayern Munich are reportedly considering a new contract proposal for the club legend, meaning this one could change either way.
