NATO and EU leaders meet at the Prado Museum for an unprecedented dinner





The Prado Museum in Madrid hosts this Wednesday the dinner for heads of state and government attending the NATO Summit these days in Madrid. The leaders dine in the Cloister of the museum and their respective companions in the Hall of the Muses. All of them have enjoyed the concert offered by the kyiv Symphony Orchestra and tasted a menu prepared by the Spanish chef José Andrés.

The President of the Government, accompanied by his wife, received the leaders and their companions inside the Prado Museum. In total, participating 30 alliesthe Secretary General of NATO, European institutions (Presidents of the Council and the Commission) and the 6 EU members that do not belong to NATO: Sweden, Finland, Cyprus, Malta, Ireland and Austria.

It is the first time that an event with this format is held: Alliance and EU leaders united around the same table on the occasion of a NATO summit. The different leaders have chatted in a relaxed atmosphere and have had time to contemplate the works of art in the museum.

The Cloister of the museum, located on the top floor of the extension to the art gallery designed by the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, is the space chosen to locate the leaders of the summit. It is a diaphanous room, delimited by a 17th century cloister, made up of two rows of arcades. The structure was part of the old monastery of San Jerónimo el Real, popularly known as Los Jerónimos.

Before dinner, the kyiv Symphony Orchestra has offered a concert in the Central Gallery of the art gallerywhich contains some of the most important works in the Prado collection, by authors such as Titian, Rubens, Carraci and Van Dyck.

The menu of the Euro-Atlantic evening is run by the Spanish chef Jose Andrés, which directs the NGO World Central Kitchen, Princess of Asturias Award for Concord for the work carried out in favor of those affected by humanitarian crises. Choosing him will evoke the typical flavors of the capital.

The menu consists of an appetizer of cod, orange and beetroot; as a starter, lobster gazpacho with basil-scented summer vegetables and Arbequina olive oil. The main course will be low-temperature lamb shoulder with lemon purée; and under the name “Flavors of Madrid”, the dessert will combine anise from Chinchón, strawberry from Aranjuez, waffle and violet caramel in a single dish.

Attendees will be presented with coins minted by the National Currency and Stamp Factory on the occasion of the 275th anniversary of the birth of Francisco de Goya. Companions will be given glass sets that they have seen being made during their visit to the Royal Glass Factory of La Granja. The bottles will have the coat of arms of Spain engraved and the glasses will be carved by the masters of the Royal Factory.
