Jack Lis died after being mauled by a dog when playing at a friend’s house after school on November 8. Today, his family and friends gathered in Caerphilly, Wales, to pay tribute to the boy

Hundreds of mourners have gathered today for the funeral of a 10-year-old boy who was killed in a dog attack earlier this month.

Jack Lis, from Pentwyn, Penyrheol, South Wales, died after being mauled when playing at a friend’s house after school on November 8.

He is said to have suffered “unsurvivable” injuries and was pronounced dead just after 4pm.

A service was held at St Martin’s Church, Caerphilly, at midday, after a procession of about 30 cars went through the town.

The hearse stopped in front of Jack’s school, where his classmates released red balloons with their tribute messages, Wales Online reports.

Crowds lined the route as the procession, headed by Jack’s favourite cars, passed.

Many people at the funeral wore red clothes as it was Jack’s favourite colour.

The Reverend Mark Greenway Robbins told the congregation: “None of us expected to be here and no one wanted to be here.

“But let us take a moment to think of how we remember Jack. Maybe it was watching films like Fast and Furious with him.

“Hold onto that particular memory of him that you treasure him for and thank him for. And let’s honour him for a moment in the quiet together.

“As we remember times of tears and laughter we thank God because of the love we shared for Jack.”

The boy’s mum Emma Whitfield paid tribute to her son, saying: “My beautiful baby boy I don’t know where to begin. I’ve spent the last 10 years watching you grow and we started to see you grow into the most amazing man.

“My heart aches so badly I won’t get the chance to see you grow. I’ll forever miss your stories about the games on the PlayStation, the cars you built on the games.

“But most of all I’ll miss your voice my boy and I’d give anything to hear you again. This isn’t a goodbye it’s a see you later dude.”

After the boy died, his heartbroken family said their “lives will never be the same without Jack”, adding: “We will forever miss his quirky ways and his stories that he would spend so long telling us.”

Jack’s mum and his dad him as “the sweetest of boys”, and said he had made them the “proudest parents”.

The family asked people to donate to the local charity 2 Wish Upon A Star, which supports those affected by the sudden death of young people.

In a statement published on Facebook after Jack’s dad, Ms Whitfield said: “With so much heart break and before close friends and family see his name in the news, I have to announce our beautiful boy Jack was taken so tragically yesterday.

“It was not our dog nor did it happen at our family home. He was out to play.

“We love you so much our sweet sweet boy.”

Neighbour Tracey Lawrence said the alarm was raised by Jack’s friend who ran out of the house as the animal attacked in the hallway.

She said: “The little boy that lives there ran over to the neighbour and said: ‘My dog has killed my friend.’

“My neighbour went and tried to push the door open but the dog had latched on to the boy’s leg.

“Everyone was out on the street crying. It was awful here. Everyone was upset.”

A 28-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the dog attack.

Gwent Police said the dog involved in the attack was 15 months old but the force is still working to identify its breed.

Chief Superintendent Mark Hobrough said: “The work to identify the breed of dog involved this attack continues.

“Once this is completed, we will be able to establish if the breed features on the list of illegal dogs to own in this country and any other criminal offences identified will be investigated fully by officers.”
