January 6, 2021 is remembered by many as the “darkest” day that the United States Capitol has never lived. A year after thousands of followers of now former Republican President Donald Trump stormed the headquarters of both Houses of Congress during the session to certify electoral victory by Joe Biden, Americans they remain concerned and see their democracy threatened by violence. The attack left five dead, including a police officer.
The role of the New York mogul in the assault remains unclear and know if Trump was responsible of what happened is one of the main objectives of the congressional committee investigating the attack, as well as finding out why it happened. Have been 725 people arrested for the assault since that date, according to the United States Department of Justice, among them the ‘shaman of QAnon’, Jacob Chansley, who has been sentenced to 41 months in prison. Authorities continue working to identify more than 350 people that they would have committed violent acts that day.
What happened to the protagonists of the assault?
Since the assault on the Capitol took place a year ago, at least 725 people have been detained by crimes related to the attack on the headquarters of the two Houses of Congress. Among them, more than 220 have been accused of assault or obstruct law enforcement.
The protagonists of this attack are – for the most part – members of extremist groups such as QAnon, Proud Boys, the anti-government Oath Keepers and the Three Percenters. More than three dozen of the accused have been identified by federal authorities as members or leaders of the Proud Boys and several members of the Oath Keepers have cooperated with the Government for months to clarify what happened a year ago.
The ‘shaman of QAnon’, sentenced to 41 months in prison for the assault on the Capitol
“There was not no specific group that was the instigator, rather, they were the groups of the most radical people from the Republican Party wing, ”José Antonio Gurpegui, professor at the Franklin Institute-Alcalá de Henares University, has assured in an interview with RTVE.es. “Everyone these groups have in common all radicalism: white supremacism, being too far to the right, taking republican ideas to these last consequences … ”, he added.
According to the professor of International Relations at IE University, Alana Moceri, since Barack Obama was president, these types of groups have been growing in the United States. “Was the first black president and thought the country was heading to the extreme left. So they thought it was something that should be corrected ”, Moceri told RTVE.es. “They they thought what they did was the right thing to do, the good thing for the country ”, he asserted.
Of the more than 700 people charged with federal crimes, at least 165 have pleaded guilty, the majority of misdemeanors punishable by up to six months in jail. Among them is the case of the so-called ‘QAnon bison’, who pleaded guilty to one charge for obstructing official proceedings during a session of Congress. At the end of November he was sentenced to three years in prison.
Another case is that of Matthew Greene, a member of the Proud Boys who recently pleaded guilty to a conspiracy count and one count of obstruction. He was arrested in April and now faces up to five years in prison for conspiracy and up to 20 years for obstruction. He is also cooperating with the authorities, becoming the first member of the far-right group to give information to prosecutors about your organization.
What factors influenced the assault?
The attack on the Capitol represented a great lack of security in one of the most important headquarters of the democratic institutions of the United States, where a session was held to ratify the victory in the presidential elections of now president Joe Biden, after his predecessor, Republican Donald Trump, reiterated that there was electoral fraud.
According to Gurpegui, this was the factor that most influenced the assault to be carried out, as well as “the more or less generalized belief among a significant percentage of Republican voters that there had been a tongo and that Biden was not the legitimate president, sino que era Donald Trump”.
