Michael Owen agrees with pundits on Manchester United vs Norwich prediction

Manchester United have it all to do if they’re to maintain their slim hopes of reaching the top four this season.

The Reds return to Old Trafford this weekend as they take on Norwich City in what is a must-win for the hosts against the Premier League’s bottom side. United will be looking for a first win since returning from the international break after what has been a dismal couple of weeks.

Ralf Rangnick’s side have seen their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League all-but fade away after taking just one point against Leicester and Everton. The defeat at Goodison Park has left them six points adrift of Tottenham in fourth with just seven games remaining.

It means they can ill-afford another slip-up as they welcome the Canaries to Old Trafford on Saturday, with Dean Smith’s side giving themselves a glimmer of hope after beating Burnley last weekend. But what do the pundits think? We’ve taken a look at their predictions for United’s clash with Norwich.

Mark Lawrenson – BBC Sport

“Norwich are hanging on in there aren’t they?” Lawrenson told BBC Sport. “They have not thrown in the towel yet, and showed it with their win over Burnley last weekend.

“There has been plenty of talk that Ajax boss Erik ten Hag is about to become Manchester United’s next manager but, for the time being, Ralf Rangnick is still interim boss and it is not working for them.

“That arrangement can work – Guus Hiddink showed that when he had four months with Chelsea and won the FA Cup in 2009 – but the Blues had a strong and united dressing room to help to run the team the right way, which United clearly don’ you have.

“They should still beat Norwich, of course, but too many of their players seem to be thinking ‘does it really matter?’ right now, and that won’t change until the new manager arrives.”

Forecast: United 2-0 Norwich

Paul Merson – Sportskeeda

“Manchester United will win this Premier League game easily, and it’ll paper over the cracks yet again,” Merson told Sportskeeda. “United couldn’t even beat Everton last week and have been in terrible shape this year.

“Norwich City can be impressive on their day – they did well to beat Burnley last week. Manchester United need to start winning matches, and they can’t afford to rest players now. If they don’t win this game, there’s no point going to Liverpool next week.”

Forecast: United 3-0 Norwich

Michael Owen – BetVictor

“There are big problems right now at Man United,” Owen told BetVictor. “The performance against Everton was shocking in spells, and there’s huge question marks over some of this squad. For all the talent on the pitch last week, they barely created anything. That shouldn’t happen.

“Every credit to Norwich for the win over Burnley last week. It would have been easy for this side to down tools, but they keep competing in each game.

“I think Norwich will keep this one tight but, at the end, United will edge it. 1-0 to United is my prediction.”

Forecast: United 1-0 Norwich
