McDonald’s is rationing tomatoes

McDonald’s has been hit by a shortage of tomatoes at some of its restaurants – forcing it to ration ingredients.

The fast food chain says its Big Tasty and Big Tasty with Bacon burgers will only be served with one slice of tomato, instead of two, as a result.

It isn’t clear how many restaurants are being affected, but images show signs being placed in several McDonald’s branches.

Maccies has also confirmed the news on social media. In a reply to one customer, he said: “We are currently experiencing a shortage in our supply of tomatoes.

“As a result, the Big Tasty and Big Tasty with Bacon are being served with one slice of tomato rather than two. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

Birmingham Live and Devon Live have both reported on local restaurants running out of tomatoes, so it appears the issue is widespread.

Maccies fans have also taken to social media to complain to the fast food giant.

One person asked: “Why do you no longer have the option to add tomatoes to a burger?”

Another said: “What’s happening with the missing tomatoes? Do we need the Sherlock Holmes to solve the mystery? Is this another Brexit benefit?

A third tweeted: “Shortage of tomatoes at @McDonaldsUK.”

The Mirror has asked McDonald’s how many restaurants are being affected and we’ll update this article when we know more.

We’re also checking if other menu items are being altered as a result of the shortage.

The Big Tasty came back to the menu last month for a limited time only.

The fan-favorite burger is made with British and Irish beef topped with two slices of Emmental cheese, lettuce and crispy onions. You can also choose to add on bacon.

If you go for the BBQ version, expect lashings of BBQ sauce too – again, with the option of bacon.

The original Big Tasty burger costs £6.39 for a medium meal and a single burger costs £4.89.

The Big Tasty BBQ and bacon options will cost £6.89 for a medium meal or £5.39 for a single burger.

It is not the first time McDonalds have experienced a shortage after they previously ran out of milkshakes in UK stores due to supply chain issues.

At the time, the UK was experiencing a shortage of lorry drivers. McDonald’s also ran out of bottled drinks in some of their 1,250 locations.

More recently, McDonald’s was forced to pull its new Chicken Big Mac burger after it proved too popular with customers.

The new Chicken Big Mac is pretty much the same as a regular Big Mac with the special sauce, but it has chicken patties instead of beef burgers.
