Manchester United’s £9m forgotten man could give Erik ten Hag a dilemma – Casey Evans

Manchester United have a number of players on loan who will be hoping to make an impact when they return, including the likes of Donny van de Beek and Amad. But one player who many fans forget about is Uruguayan winger Facundo Pellistri.

Pellistri has been on loan at Deportivo Alaves this season but has not seen the game time he would have expected. He has made 18 appearances in La Liga, but this only includes six starts and in total, he has only played 598 minutes, which is not what his parent club or the player would have wanted to continue his development.

With Alaves sitting 19th in the table with the least amount of goals scored in the league, you may have expected the manager to turn to Pellistri to try and add a creative spark going forward. But this has not been the case, with the experienced Edgar Mendez often been preferred over the winger.

But surprisingly it seems that Pellistri’s national team manager Diego Alonso is aware of the youngster’s talent and he is consistently picked to play for Uruguay. The winger started against Peru in the team’s latest World Cup qualifier on Thursday night and it shows that he may still have a future at United despite the hindrance to his development from him.

But what next for the winger? Does he stay with United and act as a rotation option, or does he go out on another loan to a team that is more likely to give him the game time he needs?

With the potential appointment of Erik ten Hag, maybe Pellistri could have a place in the squad. The Dutchman prefers wingers who are able to hold the width instead of consistently driving inside and Pellistri offers this.

Will his inexperience count against him in this regard? It is a difficult decision to make given how important wingers are to the success of Ten Hag’s tactic, but it would be unfortunate for United to lose another promising talent because they have mismanaged his development.

Speaking with United’s official media, former United striker and Pellistri’s ex-manager Diego Forlan said: I think he’s adapting really well. when they [United] talked to me about him, I told them everything – he has great potential as a player, good skills, is quick but still young.

“You know it’s not easy to arrive at a great club like Manchester United. I think being on loan at Alaves was good and now he had an opportunity to go back again. It’s a good opportunity for him, he’s still growing a little bit. In the future, he can have the opportunity to play for the first team at Manchester United.”

With a number of talented players in front of him including Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Elanga as well as fellow loanee Amad it seems unlikely he will get his chance. But as we’ve seen before stranger things have happened and if United do appoint Ten Hag it will likely be a clean slate for every player.
