Premier League title race: Man City maintain healthy lead at top

Manchester United could move for Mauricio Pochettino as early as March with his PSG future still unclear.

The Red Devils are expected to seek a new manager come the end of the season with Ralf Rangnick only filling in on an interim basis.

Pochettino is among those most heavily linked with the Old Trafford hotseat.

He was previously touted as a replacement for Jose Mourinho back in 2019 before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got the role.

Now at PSG, the Argentine has spent just over a year in Paris but things have not gone entirely to plan.

On Monday night the Parisians were dumped out of the French Cup by Nice on penalties.

They look set to reclaim their Ligue 1 title, sitting 11 points clear at the top, but their owners crave Champions League success.

Mauricio Pochettino could be replaced by Zinedine Zidane in Paris

Telefoot reports that Pochettino’s future could hinge on whether they progress past Real Madrid in the last 16.

PSG host the LaLiga giants on February 15 before the return fixture at the Bernabeu on March 9.

If the French side are knocked out then the club’s Qatari owners may look to replace Pochettino with Zinedine Zidane, who has been linked with the role.

That would then free up the former Tottenham boss.

Pochettino has previously distanced himself from the Manchester job having fielded questions earlier this season.

In November he said: “I’m good in Paris. I know well, all my life as a player or coach I have experienced this kind of situation.

“Things are happening, it’s not my responsibility. What I’m going to say if you ask me, I’m good in Paris.”

He went on to add: “I am very focused on football. I am not a kid. I spend my whole life playing football and as a coach. We are in a business where rumors are there. I understand what is going on. The rumors are there. We have to live with that.”

The Argentine was also asked if he plans to see out his PSG contract and replied: “Football is about the present.

“I said to you all, my contract is until 2023. It’s for one season more. I don’t say anything different. I am very happy at Paris Saint-Germain. It’s a fact. I am happy in Paris”

If United do not pursue Pochettino then Rangnick could yet remain in the dugout.

Paul Pogba, who is out of contract in the summer, is reportedly willing to remain at Old Trafford if the German stays.

Ajax’s Erik ten Hag has also been touted as a possible option with Spain boss Luis Enrique another alternative.
