Kate Garraway taken aback by Good Morning Britain start after admitting ‘dramas’ at home

Kate Garraway was left taken back as the latest edition of Good Morning Britain started on Thursday (May 5). The presenter was back at the helm of the ITV news program for the first of her usual twice-weekly slot where she was joined by Adil Ray.

As the show got underway this morning and the pair welcomed viewers to the show, Kate remarked: “It was my birthday yesterday,” to which Adil cheekily replied: “I wasn’t going to talk about that.”

“I’m only joking,” the 48-year-old TV presenter quickly added before the sounds of Stevie Wonder’s classic Happy Birthday started to ring out in the ITV studio and a collection of giant balloons appeared on the screen behind her.

Her co-host had been talking about Real Madrid’s Champions League celebrations after beating Man City on Wednesday night by asking her: “Were you celebrating recently?” as she responded, she added: “I don’t feel like it’s really happened as we’ve had various dramas at home.”

But as her co-stars, including Ranvir Singh, wished her many happy returns, albeit belated, Kate saw the display behind her and commented: “Oh look at that! If I’m going to get graphic balloons I’m in!” But Ranvir then joked: “Not real ones though Kate. The budget didn’t extend to real ones.”

Kate then got another surprise when Adil revealed they also had a cake for Kate, with a member of the GMB crew appearing across the studio floor to give it to her, as Adil quipped: “You have to finish it by the end of the show .”

Kate was back on the show alongside Adil Ray

The 55-year-old GMB and Smooth Radio host then smiled: “That is fantastic thank you,” and viewers were soon sharing messages on social media to Kate.

The latest dramas at home come after Kate returned to the program on Bank Holiday Monday (May 2) after a brief absence. Last week fans tuned in to see Ben hosting alongside Ranvir Singh one day and Charlotte Hawkins the other. Many will have assumed Kate was taking a break after stepping into the main hosting role over the Easter holidays in place of Susanna Reid.

However, as the latest episode of her new show, Garraway’s Good Stuff, aired on ITV on Saturday (April 30), Kate shared a clip from the episode of her and guest Peter Andre bouncing on mini trampolines. She wrote to her followers of her: “So apologies for my absence from @gmb this last week-had to deal with some ‘urgents’ at home.”

She carried on: “But before that managed to get a whole hour dollop of #garrawaysgoodstuff in the bag for you . Great #feelgood shares from @peterandre & @jamesbaymusic – plus this?! Note to self – wear a sports bra – note to @peterandre – wear a belt.”

While Kate didn’t elaborate on her issues at home, fans know that Kate helps care for her husband Derek Draper as well as look after their two children, 16-year-old Darcey and Billy, 12.

Kate has been open about her family’s struggle after Derek was struck down with coronavirus in March 2020. The virus ‘wreaked havoc’ on the former Labor lobbyist’s body and he spent more than a year in hospital. Derek, also 54, returned home in April last year where he receives round-the-clock care.
