Kate Garraway all smiles on family day out to Winter Wonderland after New Years’ Honour

Kate Garraway, who has publicly documented her husband Derek Draper’s long recovery from covid, shared some family time with her son and daughter after a ‘bumpy’ 24 hours

Kate Garraway soaked up some light relief with her children at the capital’s Winter Wonderland – just days after she was recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list.

The GMB presenter, 54, who has been made an MBE since documenting her husband Derek Draper’s long battle with coronavirus, appeared all smiles when out at the top London seasonal attraction.

The TV star smiled and waved from aboard a classic carousel ride, wrapped up in a blue teddy coat and matching wool jumper, alongside her beaming 15-year-old daughter Darcey.

The pair looked in good spirits and appeared to lark about together on the horses as an open mouthed Kate took in the rides plentiful bounces.

The outing also saw the mum-of-two sharing the thrill of the fair ground stalls appearing animated as son William, 12, sporting a backwards facing cap and bobbed hair, tossed a hoop on the green bottles in a bid to win a prize.

The trip was welcome relief as the presenter opened up about a ‘bumpy’ 24 hours as they feared Derek – who is believed to be the countries longest suffering Covid survivor – may have to go back to hospital.

Fortunately their fears weren’t founded and a nurse/carer treated Derek allowing him to stay at home with his family.

And although Kate and her kids were enjoying festivities, one trip this year was more notable than others as their first as a family saw Derek accompany them on a trip to watch Cinderella at Richmond Theatre in London.

Garraway told Woman’s Own magazine ahead of Christmas: “This year, we have got him home — and fingers crossed we can keep him home.

“Of course, he’s not going to be putting on his Santa costume going out with Darcey for a father-and-daughter Christmas shop or the same with Billy.

“None of those things are on the horizon at the moment so it’s adjusting to a new normal but also grateful he’s here at all which we didn’t have at all last year and feared would never happen.”

And the journalist was happy to share a shot of her children snuggled next to Derek after not everything had gone to plan with the cooking or presents either.

Former Political Advisor Derek, 54, sustained long-lasting damage to his organs and has undergone a public battle with the virus which was featured in a documentary by his wife Kate.

A sequel is underway and is titled Caring For Derek, which will look at Derek’s return home as Kate endures the daily challenges of social care.

Kate also appeared on Piers Morgan on Life Stories where she told her former colleague: “It’s devastated him……

“He still can’t communicate, he still has issues with mobility. Fundamentally, he’s in a terrible state. Look, he’s alive, Piers.”

She added: “He will turn to me and say, ‘I love you’.

And the New Year will see a role swap for Kate as she steps into the interviewers seat replacing former GMB co-star Pier presenting Life Stories on ITV.
