Jamie Carragher has been proven right about Manchester United’s signing of Jadon Sancho

When Jadon Sancho completed his big-money move to Manchester United last summer, the England international was signed in a bid to solve the club’s long-term search for a right-sided winger.

United, who will resume their Premier League campaign on April 2 against Leicester City at Old Trafford, had been tracking Sancho for several years and were determined to get their man. He was identified as their number one target to become their first choice right-winger for the future.

However, it is on the left flank where the 21-year-old has impressed most so far this season. He struggled to nail down a place in the team under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and it soon became clear that he was going to need more time to adjust to the demands of the Premier League, following the experience of playing in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund .

However, in the last couple of months, Sancho has started to go up through the gears and is beginning to show why United were so keen on signing him. But it has come as a result of interim boss Ralf Rangnick deploying him on the opposite flank to the one that he was signed to strengthen.

He has scored two league goals and registered three assists in 2022 and all of those contributions have come from the left. Those figures, however, will have come as no surprise to former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.

That is because the Sky Sports pundit, when revealing his predictions for this season back in August, admitted that he felt Sancho is just as capable of performing to the best of his abilities on the left as he is on the right. He had analyzed his numbers from him and based his prediction from him on his findings from him.

“I think he could be a superstar, I really do,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “You look at his numbers on him in German football. Gary [Neville] has mentioned that they need this player on the right side, at times I think he is as good on the left if you look at his stats.”

Jadon Sancho has been excellent in recent weeks.

Having tipped Sancho to be his ‘one to watch’ back in August, Carragher faced the prospect of being mocked when his prediction was revisited in December. However, the former England defender stuck to his original view and Sancho’s form of him in the last eight weeks or so has proven him to be correct.

“I’m not trying to back out of it,” Carragher said, just days before 2021 drew to close. “I wanted to actually watch Jadon Sancho because I had spoken so much about how well he’d done at Dortmund.

“And I think at the end of last season we didn’t put him in our Euros squad and we got a lot of stick for that on social media. I hadn’t seen enough from him and when I’d seen him in an England shirt I hadn’t been that impressed.

“He was one to watch as in ‘I want to see what he’s about’. Listen, it hasn’t started well for him, but he’s still a young player, he’s got plenty of time, a few years at United, but you ‘d definitely want a bit more from him, no doubt.”

Since making that admission, Carragher has seen Sancho kick on. He has been arguably United’s best player since the beginning of February and has responded to Rangnick’s challenge that was set for him.
