Emmerdale has been the topic of conversation since Matthew Wolfenden became embroiled in a race row, with it most recently being reported that Charley Webb has quit the show.

It was first claimed at the beginning of November that Matthew and co-star Isabel Hodgins – who play on-screen couple David Metcalfe and Victoria Sugden – clashed furiously while filming alongside Aaron Anthony.

At that point, it still wasn’t known what the feud was about, but sources claimed the argument left people on set ‘feeling uncomfortable.’

A spokesperson had explained that ‘neither actor had been suspended from Emmerdale.’

Two weeks later, reports came out that Emmerdale had been hit with a race probe following claim s an actress’ accent was “mimicked” by co-stars on set.

Both Matthew and Isabel had been absent from filming at this point.

Matthew and Isabel faced claims that a female mixed-race actress’ accent was mimicked, The Sun had reported at the time.

The pair had categorically denied all the allegations and any wrongdoing, suggesting that instead there has been a misunderstanding, according to the publication.

It was also claimed that Matthew rowed with Aaron (who plays Ellis Chapman) following the incident.

A source told the publication: “It is common knowledge on set that Matthew and Isabel are not filming at the moment following a complaint.

“This all came about after a conversation between them and another actress — during which the alleged remark was made.

“An accusation was also made that the actress’s accent had been mimicked.”

Aaron apparently brought up the topic with Matthew but the conversation became ‘tense’.

Following their chat, Aaron reportedly quit the show as he was ‘bitterly angry’ about the situation.

A source explained to The Sun this month: “Aaron is bitterly angry about this situation and he has had to be persuaded to come back to Leeds to film his scenes in recent months.”

“He has done some filming over the last couple of weeks, but the understanding is that those scenes will be his last,” they continued.

“He has been very vocal in his opinions about the allegations and about the way in which the enquiries have been handled by the bosses. He now feels his position on the show is untenable.”

Some fans claimed they recently witnessed Matthew leaving the set, leaving people wondering if he has returned to filming.

It has not been officially confirmed whether the star will be filming after he was suddenly written out of the soap after nearly being killed in the rapids during explosive episodes in October.

The situation was deepened when it was reported that Matthew’s wife Charley Webb (who plays Debbie Dingle) quit the long-running soap after 19 years.

It had been suggested that Charley is “closing the door’ on the ITV soap for good” after husband Matthew became embroiled in the racism row.

An insider has suggested that the row “fuelled her decision to step back”.

The 33-year-old has three children with David Metcalfe actor Matthew.
