Everything is ready in Southern Basque Country to begin this Wednesday to administer the pediatric vaccine against covid. They will do it in health centers and authorized points such as vaccination centers and hospitals.

The first consignment of 1.3 million vaccines Pediatric Pfizer for children from 5 to 11 years has arrived this Monday in Madrid. The Ministry of Health has distributed them among the autonomies according to their target population. The first to vaccinate will be children at risk and the elderly (10 and 11 years).

The vials for children will have an orange cap to distinguish them from those for adults, and unlike older ones, the pediatric formula is reduced to 10 micrograms, a third of normal, and does not require dissolution.

Basque Autonomous Community

The 60,000 vials of the vaccine have arrived at Hernani’s warehouse at noon, but will not be inoculated until Wednesday.

Families should wait to receive an SMS from the Basque Health Service to request an appointment. The administration of vaccines will be carried out progressively from the age of 11 and under depending on the number of doses available.

The inoculation of people between 11-5 years old, about 145,000, will be done progressively, from older to younger, so the first to be vaccinated will be those between 11 and 9 years old, and progressively, depending on the availability of doses, will be lowered in age until reaching the population of 5 years.

According to forecasts, the Department of Health will receive on Monday a first batch of 60,000 doses of the Pfizer brand, which is the only pediatric vaccine currently authorized by the European Medicines Agency. It is a different preparation from the one administered to the adult population, since the dose is lower.

For its part, Navarra has received the first 18,000 doses to vaccinate children between 5 and 11 years old against covid-19. The process will begin on December 15 in rural areas and on December 16 it will do so with the children of Pamplona and the Comarca with the launch of the vaccination point at the Seminar. The vaccination will go from older to younger.

The Minister of Health of the Government of Navarra, Saints Induráin, has explained this week in statements to the media that more detailed information will be given to families on citation and vaccination in the coming days. For the moment, the Executive has decided that childhood vaccination begins in rural areas and the places where it will be carried out are being designed. “In principle, it is not planned to be in the school environment. We are also approaching vacation days that will also be used. Parents will be informed of how to make an appointment,” said the counselor.

Pfizer’s pediatric antidote against covid is endorsed by the European Medicines Agency, which concluded that, although children between the ages of 5 and 11 have mild or asymptomatic disease, the benefits of vaccinating them outweigh the risks.

In trials, the vaccine was 90.7% effective in preventing symptomatic COVID-19. The children will also be given two punctures, although separated not by 21 days but by eight weeks, at the proposal of the experts from the vaccine presentation.
