Gogglebox slapped with more complaints from viewers as fury over ‘upsetting’ scenes continue

Gogglebox has been slapped with more complaints after viewers shared their disgruntlement with the broadcasting watchdog over recent scenes. Fans of the Channel 4 show had already lodged more than 100 complaints with Ofcom over an episode aired on April 22.

As usual, the families – including sibling best pals Jenny Newby and Lee Riley, Manchester’s the Malones, and sisters Amira and Iqra – were giving out their latest views on the most recent TV shows and breaking news when among the shows featured was AppleTV’s Roar.

The feminist anthology series, which premiered earlier this month, is based on the 2018 short story collection of the same name by Cecelia Ahern and features Nicole Kidman as a producer.

But the clip shown during the episode of Gogglebox last month, from “The Woman Who Was Fed By a Duck” starring Merritt Wever, left viewers not only shocked but ‘traumatized’. It showed Merritt as Elisa who found herself striking up a conversation with a duck in the park.

In the bizarre scenes, the pair become friends and it appears Eliza had a crush on her new companion. But things took an unexpected turn when the bird instructed Elisa to lie on the floor and remove her trousers from her before the Goggleboxers and viewers had to witness the woman and the duck engaging in an intimate act.

While watching the clip, Giles turned to his wife Mary to question the mechanics of the scene, saying: “The duck can’t physically…” before Mary quipped: “Well he can Nutty, he can use his beak….”

It was a surprise to viewers and the Gogglebox stars

After the show finished airing, Mary said: “It’s terrible. Really bad. It’s the worst program I’ve ever seen,” to which husband Giles replied: “No, I think you’re exaggerating.” She said back: “No, I think it’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen,” and it appeared many agreed with her.

As can be expected, fans flooded to social media to comment on the scenes which left some ‘genuinely upset’ and ‘violated’. It was reported last week that Ofcom had received 149 complaints about the episode with the broadcasting watchdog confirming the complaints related to clips from Appl TV’s Roar.

The duck scenes were too much for viewers

However, this has now increased with the watchdog receiving a further 68 complaints from April 26 until May 2, on top of the previous, relating to clips shown from the episode of the Apple TV show.

The Channel 4 favorite will return to screens on Friday night (May 6) as the 19th series continues. It has also been confirmed that a special edition of Celebrity Gogglebox will be among a series of films and shows in a bumper Channel 4 season to mark 50 years since the first Pride march took place in the UK.

Nick Grimshaw and his niece Liv and Rylan Clark along with his mum Linda will return to feature in the episode alongside other British LGBTQ+ personalities including The Chase’s Paul Sinha and his husband Oliver.
