EastEnders fans hail Kim Medcalf’s dramatic Sam Mitchell return

Sam Mitchell returned to EastEnders on Monday night in dramatic fashion in the last scene, as actress Kim Medcalf took up the role once more, ready to cause expected chaos.

Visiting brother Phil (Steve McFadden) in prison, Sam got to strut up to his table in the visiting room in style in a blue dress and heeled boots.

As the siblings exchanged greetings, Phil told her, ‘It’s good to see you, Sam’, to which she replied: ‘Yeah, it’s good to be back.’

Cue the soap leaving us all on tenterhooks until the next episode, but fans were living for the tease of Sam’s return as her grand entrance was set up with shots excluding her face – and identity – until Phil got to clap his eyes on her himself.

With one viewer saying they’d ‘predicted the future’ with how the soap teased fans, another tweeted excitedly: ‘Sam Mitchell!!! Let the games begin.’

‘Now that’s what I call an entrance!’ one impressed viewer shared.

‘I’m so very happy Sam Mitchell is FINALLY back,’ gushed one fan. ‘I haven’t been this excited for an @bbceastenders return since Janine Butcher came back.’

Plenty of others were hailing Kim’s return as the ‘queen’ of Walford too.

Actress Kim shared before that Sam is ‘back for a reason’, adding: ‘Let’s just say she’s got work to do. Being Sam Mitchell there’s obviously going to be a lot of trouble.

‘Trouble follows her in her wake. Ella she’s going to cause lots of drama in typical Sam Mitchell style and she’s also going to upset a few people.’

Danniella Westbrook famously originated the role of Sam in the soap as a teenager, from 1990 to 1993, popping up again in 1995, 1996 and 2000.

However, as the actress experienced well-documented struggles with cocaine addiction, the 2002 reappearance of Sam Mitchell introduced Kim in the role, which she kept for a three-year stint.

After Kim moved onto other projects, including theater roles, Sam returned to EastEnders for brief appearances in 2009 and 2016, both played by Danniella, before Kim came back for the 2022 story arc.

With Sam set to make it over to Albert Square later this week to take up the reins of the family business in her sibling’s absence, this is likely to put some noses out of joint with Ben (Max Bowden) feeling aggrieved and Sharon (Letitia Dean ) exchanging angry words – and chucked glasses of wine – with Sam.

Elsewhere, Sam is also set to clash with Denise (Diane Parish) and Jack (Scott Maslen) over Sam’s son Ricky.
