Donny van de Beek: Everton close to signing midfielder on loan from Man Utd despite interest from Crystal Palace | Transfer Center News

Everton are close to signing Donny van de Beek on loan after reaching a deal with Manchester United.

The Dutch international’s salary will be paid in full by the Toffees, who will not have the option of making his signing permanent.

Crystal Palace and Valencia were also in talks to sign Van de Beek during the January transfer window, but he opted for a move to Goodison Park.

Palace entered negotiations with United after Dennis Bergkamp, the father of Van de Beek’s partner, triggered the talks.

Palace boss Patrick Vieira was pushing for a deal after he was contacted by former Arsenal teammate Bergkamp about Van de Beek, who is in a relationship with the Dutchman’s daughter Estelle. , and the couple is expecting their first child this year.

Valencia were also in talks with United for the 24-year-old, but there were questions about whether the Spanish outfit would be able to cover his salary.

Van de Beek has struggled to break into the first team at Old Trafford since moving from Ajax for £39m in the summer of 2020.

He has been a largely peripheral figure under both current caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick and former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite a scoring debut for the club.

Van de Beek’s only goal this season came in United’s 4-1 defeat at Watford, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s last game before he was sacked.

Van de Beek is believed to have felt let down by Solskjaer after giving him playing-time guarantees.

But Van de Beek has also struggled to make an impact under Rangnick, having been limited to just 380 minutes of action this season without starting a Premier League match.

He has just two goals and two assists to his name in 50 United appearances.

Van de Beek’s future will be reassessed after the season is over, when United have a new manager in place.

Van de Beek had been the talisman of Erik ten Hag’s young and exciting Ajax side, which reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019, scoring six goals in the competition and 28 more in over 100 Eredivisie appearances.

The midfielder has three and a half years to complete his contract at Old Trafford, although United have the option to extend the deal for a further year.

A fortnight ago, Ralf Rangnick said he wanted to keep Van de Beek at United.

Analysis: What went wrong at Man Utd?

The arrival of Donny van de Beek at Old Trafford has not stopped moving. Darren Fletcher described it as a “bargain” of £39m. Ole Gunnar Solskajer spoke about his “fantastic” quality. A giddy Rio Ferdinand addressed him as “Sir Donny” on Twitter.

The 24-year-old had attracted the interest of a host of top European clubs while at Ajax, and his standout performances during his run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019 marked him out as one of the youngest midfielders exciting.

But his move to Manchester United has been a story of frustration and stagnant progress. Van de Beek made just four Premier League starts in his first season. This time, the Dutch midfielder has yet to make one.

Van de Beek’s biggest obstacle at Manchester United has been the presence of Bruno Fernandes.

Characteristic

Van de Beek played his best football for Ajax in the 10th position, scoring and creating goals at a formidable pace, but by the time he arrived at Old Trafford in September 2020, Fernandes was firmly established as United’s most important player in the position. .

The Portuguese international had made a transformative impact upon his arrival from Sporting Lisbon eight months earlier, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists in his first 14 Premier League appearances to help United secure a third-place finish.

It has continued in the same vein ever since.

Fernandes has scored more goals (25) and contributed more assists (17) in the Premier League than any other Manchester United player since the start of last season. He has also played the most minutes (4,879).

Van de Beek, by contrast, played just 582 minutes in the same time frame. A player who enjoyed great prominence at Ajax has had to settle for a supporting role throughout his time at United.

There have been occasional glimpses of his quality, most recently with his well-received goal against Watford in November, but his attacking performance hasn’t come close to matching Fernandes’s on the rare occasions he’s been thrown aside.

For many Manchester United fans, there is frustration that more efforts have not been made to accommodate Van de Beek elsewhere in the team, but that has always seemed like a challenge.

There was no obvious role for him in Solskjaer’s 4-2-3-1 formation: he’s too attack-minded to play midfield two, and not quick or powerful enough to fill one of the wide positions, and the interim coach Ralf Rangnick. he has now returned to the same system after unsuccessfully trying a 4-2-2-2 setup after his appointment.

Solskjaer spoke that Van de Beek and Fernandes complement each other in qualities after the former’s arrival at the club in 2020, but 18 months later neither he nor Rangnick have found a place for both in the same team.

Tellingly, they have only started six games together in all competitions since the start of last season.
