A couple have transformed a former rental home with beige walls and light floors into a gorgeous home described as a ‘luxury hotel’.

Alicia Murphy, 28, and her husband, Guy, moved into their West Derby home in Liverpool in September 2018 with their rescue dog, Otis, after thinking the property ladder was out of reach for them.

It wasn’t until the pair spoke to a mortgage adviser that they realised they could be eligible for a 5% deposit option, Liverpool Echo reported.

Alicia, who is from Liverpool originally said: “I loved that it had character in the form of period features, I loved the location and it was pretty much a clean slate decor wise, which meant we could put our own spin on it.

“I think it had been a rental property before the owner decided to sell it on, so it was very much beige walls, light floors, etc.”

The couple paid just under £130,000 for the home with a £7,000 deposit and said their monthly cost of living was around £800 including their mortgage and bills.

Once they moved in to the property Alicia began experimenting with different colours and decoration options to make everything their own ‘original style’.

But the 28-year-old admitted she didn’t have an initial vision for the property.

She said: “Originally we’d only planned to paint the walls green and have a green sofa, and it wasn’t until we moved in and I started experimenting with decorating, colour schemes and interior styles that I realised I totally loved everything ‘maximalist’ and quirky.

“Social media has been amazing for providing inspiration and ideas.

“Instagram is one of the main platforms I use – not only can you see other people’s amazing homes and styling, but you can also follow along with tutorials and DIYs and actually try them out for yourself. I also use Pinterest a lot.”

Six months after moving into the Liverpool home, Alicia set up her own blog and Instagram account to keep people updated with her progress and to share ideas with others.

The Emerald Terrace Instagram now has 34.3k followers.

Alicia said: “I’d wanted to start a blog for years and just wasn’t sure what my niche could be.

“To tell you the truth, I was never too interested in interiors before moving into this house. I set up the account about six months after moving in – a few people said I should try it because my home was that little bit different, and it just grew from there really!”

Hundreds of people comment on the Emerald Terrace Instagram updates to ask Alicia questions and compliment her home.

One commenter said: “You’ve NAILED the luxury hotel bathroom vibe.”

Another added: “Forever wishing I could copy and paste your perfect perfect home for myself!”

Looking ahead, the couple said they expect to move on in the future but can see themselves living in West Derby for a few more years yet.

The 28-year-old said: “I think we’ll definitely move on in the future as it’d be great to have some more space, but that won’t be for a few years now. I’ve already had people jokingly tell me they’ll be the first to buy it if I ever come to sell!”
