One in three women and people with a cervix do not undergo cervical screening, according to the cervical cancer charity Jo’c Cervical Cancer Trust.
Coronation Street projected a story of awareness when Sinead Osbourne, played by Katie McGlynn, was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2018.
The character, who passed away on the show in October 2019, was diagnosed while pregnant and temporarily stopped her treatment because she feared it would harm her unborn child.
She found out her cancer was terminal on her wedding day in September 2019 after it had spread to her lymph nodes and liver.
In the soap opera, Sinead was informed that she could not have a cervical exam because she was told that she was too young at 24 years old.
Sinead’s story prompted calls from viewers to lower the age for cervical screening.
Coronation Street worked closely with Mummy’s Star Charities, the charity dedicated to women and their families affected by cancer during pregnancy, and Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust on the story to ensure accuracy.
Cervical screening checks the health of the cervix, the opening of the womb, and is a test to help prevent cancer.
All women and people with a cervix between the ages of 25 and 64 must be invited by letter.
During the evaluation appointment, a small sample of cells is taken from the cervix with a soft brush.
Brooke’s character left the famous cobblestones to go on a road trip in October 2019 and the door was left open for her character to return.

Brooke welcomed her first child Mexx Vincent on October 23, 2019 and on May 4 last year Brooke gave birth to her second child Monroe with her partner Kean Bryan.
Brooke is currently enjoying spending time being a mother to her two children and has admitted that she’s not quite sure when she’ll get back together with Corrie.
“I’m just being a mom and getting back on my feet and trying to get into a routine and focus on them,” she told the Daily Star in August.
“It’s kind of a decision that we make as a family and it’s nice to have that special time with them without any major distractions from what’s been going on.”
