Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall will become Queen when Prince Charles takes the throne, according to one royal expert.
The Duchess has been given the highest honour for her services to the monarchy, fuelling speculation that Her Majesty may yet back Camilla to be Queen when Charles takes the throne.
Camilla married Charles in 2005 and since that year has officially supported the Queen through her own public works and engagements.
The wife of a king usually uses the title of Queen Consort but due to negative public opinion at the time of their wedding, an official statement from Clarence House said it is “intended that The Duchess will be known as HRH The Princess Consort”
But royal historian and author Hugo Vickers says Camilla’s new title as Royal Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter clears the way for the Duchess to become Queen and signals how highly respected she is by the monarch.
He told The Mail on Sunday: It comes at the beginning of what will be the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year, binding together the inner circle of the Royal Family after 12 months of turbulence, controversy and deep personal loss.
“But, more than that, it paves the way for the Duchess to become not only Queen by right when Prince Charles succeeds to the throne, but Queen by name.
“That is surely what will now happen.”
Royal expert Robert Jobson has previously claimed that Camilla will be Queen and believes the word ‘intended’ was used in the original wording of the statement to give the public time to warm to her.
In his book Charles at 70: Thoughts, Hopes And Dreams, Mr Jobson writes: “The critical word in this statement, of course, was ‘intended’. What Clarence House was doing was buying time — time for a hostile public to warm to Camilla.

“Prince Charles, however, has always intended her to become his Queen Consort. According to an inside source, he’d already decided that before their wedding.”
Camilla’s elevation to the nation’s most prestigious order of chivalry is in recognition of her contribution to the monarchy.
The Duchess of Cornwall is patron or supporter of a number of literacy charities, speaks out in support of victims of domestic violence and champions several animal welfare organisations.
The appointment of Royal Knights and Ladies of the Order of the Garter is in the gift of the Queen who acts independently of Number 10 and recognises those who have served the sovereign personally.
Kate Middleton was awarded the Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victoria Order as a wedding anniversary present from the Queen in 2019.
