A pub owner has divided opinion after slating a budget hotel as “by far the worst” he has ever stayed in.

Craig Harker, who owns The George Pub and Grill in Stockton, Teesside, slammed the £29-a-night room he was given at the nearby Metro Inns in the city, Gazette Live reports.

Writing about the awful experience in a social media post, he said: “I can’t stay here, I can’t. It stinks. It stinks of cigarettes, absolutely stinks. I am genuinely shocked, I didn’t think places like this actually exists.”

Mr Harker – who has a following of thousands on his pub’s Facebook page – often posts videos of reviews and his opinions of hotels he stays in.

He said: “I don’t know what to say. It’s just like the whole place needs a good scrub, some tlc and some money spending on it. It doesn’t even need scrubbing, it needs knocking down and rebuilding.

“I don’t think I have ever been to a hotel as bad as that. That is absolutely disgusting.”

On Tripadvisor, the hotel has been given an average rating of three out of five – with some visitors saying they were happy with it for the money, with staff often praised.

One wrote: “Was an enjoyable stay. Easy check in. Staff very welcoming. Simple/basic yet good value for money accommodation. Clean.”

Another said: “Staff were very helpful and friendly. Room was functional and relatively comfortable (better than I expected). Very good value – would recommend, especially for short stays.”

And another visitor said: “We basically needed a base from which to travel around the North East.

“We had few requirements other than that our room was comfortable for the short periods of time that we would spend in it and it fit the bill perfectly.

“Look, it is what it is. If you are expecting luxury this is not for you. It is very basic, as you would expect for the price but it was clean and comfortable.”

However, other people who posted on the popular travel site were in agreement with Craig and not very impressed with the Metro Inns Teesside.

One said: “Arrived to an untidy messy entrance, the room stank, no ensuite, checked out within 10 minutes. Booked into another hotel. The receptionist was very warm and friendly the only pleasant thing about the place.”

Someone else said: “The cells in HMP Strangeways are bigger and cleaner than the rooms here.

“Urine and blood stained mattresses and pillows, fag butts in draws, a lot of dust and rubbish under the bed.

“The room smells like an old people home. Refused to stay there. Absolutely disgusting.”
