Cadiz pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the La Liga season, beating FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou 1-0. The three points will provide a massive boost in Cadiz’s fight against relegation to the second division, while it complicates Barcelona’s quest to seal a spot in the UEFA Champions League next season.
The winning goal by Cadiz was scored three minutes after the halftime break when ex-Arsenal forward Lucas Perez bundled home a rebound near the goal line after Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen stopped back-to-back efforts on the Barca goal.
Barcelona, which played a punchless first half, poured on the pressure for the remainder of the second half, but Cadiz goalkeeper Jeremias Ledesma came up big every time he was called into action. Barcelona brought on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Adama Traore and Luuk de Jong off the bench, but Cadiz held strong.
And it was Cadiz which generated the best chances to double their lead in the second half. A missed shot by a wide-open Alex Fernandez, a tip save by Barcelona’s Ter Stegen, and Barca’s right post kept Cadiz off the board on three separate occasions. Cadiz also had the best chance in the first half, but Perez could not convert on his chance from him.
Barcelona are now one of five teams within five points, battling for three remaining Champions League berths. La Liga leaders Real Madrid will claim the other one, and have also moved closer to clinching the 2021-22 title with a 15-point lead and only six matches remaining in the season (Barcelona also have a game in hand).
At the bottom of the table, Cadiz emerged from the third and final relegation spot, jumping above Mallorca and Granada. They now sit two points above the drop zone with a home game against Athletic Club coming up on Thursday.
The Barcelona loss in La Liga comes just four days after an embarrassing Europa League elimination suffered at home against Eintracht Frankfurt. The German side won 3-2, but it also traveled an estimated 30,000 fans who invaded the Camp Nou. The surprising takeover of its home field by the away supporters led to Barcelona changing its ticket policy for European competitions.
Barcelona upcoming La Liga schedule sees them travel to face Real Sociedad on Thursday (April 21), followed by two more home games against relegation-threatened sides Rayo Vallecano (April 24) and Mallorca (May 1).

94th minute: YELLOW card for Ferran Torres for protests. The frustration is boiling over for the Blaugrana.
90th minute: Seven minutes of stop page time.
89th min.: A wild end to this game. After a seemingly harmless Ivan Alejo cross nearly surprised Ter Stegen, going off the base of the right post, Cadiz goalkeeper Ledesma comes up big again on a point-blank volley attempt by Aubameyang.
86th minute: The referee runs a bottle of water to the sidelines. It was thrown from the stands. The fans are growing restless.
85th minute: Another stop by Ledesma! Moments after stopping a Luuk de Jong header on a corner, he stops an Eric Garcia shot. Ledesma will be the man of the match if the score holds.
82nd min.: SUB — Santiago Arzamendia is in for Raul Sobrino.
79th min.: Another chance for Cádiz! This time Raul Sobrino gets his shot on goal and it leads to a corner kick. Again, it was Ivan Alejo with the run down the right and the cutback cross.
77th min.: SUBS — Here are Barcelona’s next two moves:
Luuk de Jong -> Frenkie De Jong
Adama Traore -> Clement Lenglet
76th min.: Cadiz nearly score a second in transition! What a miss by Alex Fernandez, who is wide open in the box. But he sends Ivan Alejo’s service wide right! He had to get that shot on target at minimum.
69th min.: YELLOW card for Sergino Dest. It’s Cadiz center back Fali Gimenez who expertly draws the foul and the caution for the American right back.
68th minute: Cadiz ‘keeper Jeremias Ledesma comes up with two big stops, including on a blistering shot from Dembele. The Argentine has been solid so far today.
64th minute: SUBS — Cadiz’s turn to make changes. Ivan Alejo is on (for Salvi Sanchez) and Fede San Emeterio also enters (for Jose Mari in midfield).
62nd min: SUB — Barcelona brings on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for Memphis Depay at the center forward position.
61st min: YELLOW for Cadiz’s Luis Hernandez. He goes in for a sliding tackle and wins the ball, but he leaves his studs showing on the follow through. That recklessness is punished by a yellow.
58th minute: The crowd is now up in arms about every Cadiz challenge. One of them leaves Ferran Torres on the ground after his head struck the turf. Barcelona are preparing a sub.
48th minute: Goal Cádiz! After a Jordi Alba giveaway, a beautiful cross into the Barcelona box is headed on goal by Raul Sobrino, but Ter Stegen twice stops his shots. But Lucas Perez was there to punch the ball home. Shock lead from the club that’s third from bottom.

46th min.: Second half has kicked off and there’s already a bit more zip and urgency to the Barcelona movements. No subs for either team.
Halftime: Barcelona 0, Cádiz 0
Halftime: This match is playing out as many would have expected. Barcelona are taking it to Cadiz, but there’s a whole lot of touches outside the Cadiz back, but the home team is having a tough time breaking through. It’s best moments have come through an inspired Ousmane Dembele. Cadiz had the best chance of the match in transition, but ex-Arsenal man Lucas Perez failed to convert with only the ‘keeper to beat. Barcelona will surely want to speed things up in the second half and Cadiz has some dangerous subs off the bench. This match is still wide open.
42nd min: YELLOW card for Sergio Busquetswho stops a Cadiz counter by scything Danish midfielder Jens Jonsson from behind.
39th minute: Chance for Dembele! Cadiz lose the ball in midfield, the ball lands on the feet of Dembele, who bursts toward the box and fires a low shot that is stopped by Cadiz’ keeper Ledesma. The best Barcelona attacks have come through Dembele.
27th minute: What a counterattack by Cadiz! Sobrino beats his defender down the right and puts the ball on a platter for Lucas Perez, but he misses the top left corner. Perez wants Sergino Dest to be called for a push, but there was nothing there.

23rd min.: First a Dembele shot is blocked in the box and then Jordi Alba tries a shot with his right foot(!) but it’s high. Round of applause from the fans for the initiative shown, but Barcelona are having a tough time finding a way through the Cadiz back line thus far.
18th minute: Barcelona in transition and Dembele wide right puts the ball on his left foot, but his curler looking for the far corner is way off the mark.
14th minute: Cadiz got through the Barcelona backline with a great through ball by Lucas Perez for left back Pacho Espino, who made a run in behind. But Barcelona goalkeeper Ter Stegen gets to it first.
3rd minute: No fooling around Barcelona. Dembele makes a penetrating run down the right and Cadiz goalkeeper Ledesma stop his shot and then a follow-up on the rebound. No danger on the ensuing corner.
1st minute: We’re off at the Camp Nou. And there’s no doubt about which team the majority of the crowd is backing. Memphis Depay with an early warning blast that finished wide left.
1st minute: A section of fans haven’t shown up in protest over what happened in the match against Eintracht Frankfurt.
