Adama Troare underwent a medical in Barcelona on Friday night before his transfer from Wolves.
Barcelona have offered a loan move with a £29m option to make a permanent deal and Traore would like to return to the club where he began his career.
Sky sports news reported earlier this week that Spurs were closing in on a £20m deal for the 26-year-old after their previous £15m offer was rejected, but Barca now seem to have gotten ahead of the game. Antonio Conte’s team in the race to sign him.
Traore was not convinced by Tottenham’s offer to use him in a variety of positions.
Sky sports news he also understands that Tottenham will not try to convince Traore to turn down Barcelona and will instead focus on other goals.
Tottenham are continuing talks on a deal for Porto winger Luis Diaz as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the transfer deadline.
Traore was on the Wolves bench for Saturday’s 2-1 win over Brentford but came on for the final 15 minutes and had a goal ruled out by VAR for offside.
He has been a long-time target of Spurs, who were in talks to sign him at the end of the summer transfer window. That interest has continued despite the change of head coach from former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo to Conte.
Traore is out of contract in June 2023 and a new deal has been on the table for 15 months, and his current club are keen to keep him.
“It seems that the Spurs have lost Traore”
SSN chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol on ‘The Transfer Show’:
“Spurs appear to have missed out on Adama Traore, with Barcelona in principle agreeing a deal to take him on loan from Wolves, with an option to buy him in the summer for around £25m.
“Spurs have been trying to buy Traore and have made a £15m offer, which was not enough. There was some expectation that a deal could be done for around £20m, but Barcelona have come for the player, who used to play for the Barcelona Academy.
“And when a club like Barcelona comes in for you, it’s very hard to say no and that’s why he’s decided to come back to Barcelona. And I really don’t think Spurs could have done much about it.”
“There are reports in Spain that he has also agreed to take a pay cut to move to Barcelona, so it seems like bad news for Spurs as far as Traore is concerned.”
Blow for the Spurs but pull of the Barça is strong
Sky Sports’ Adam Bate analysis:
Missing out on Adama Traore represents a huge blow to Antonio Conte and Tottenham – this was a deal thought to be all but assured with the club eager to add more signings too. The failure to land the Spain international leaves them with a problem.
Traore had been identified to provide momentum down the flank, where Emerson Royal has lacked the creativity to beat a man in the opposing third. While Traore’s defense has been questioned, no one doubts that his ability to carry the ball would have added a new dimension.
Now there is talk that he never liked the job. Traore has only been used there in desperation by Bruno Lage, when he was behind Brentford and Crystal Palace, and the last time he played at full-back under Nuno Espirito Santo was in the autumn of 2019, with mixed results.
Most likely, Barcelona’s interest made him change his mind. Although Traore has spent the last six and a half years in England, settling in well, Catalonia has always been his home. He joined Barça’s youth team at the age of eight and made his LaLiga debut with the club at 17.
The chance to return as an international player in his prime and ready to make an impact with his old teammate Xavi Hernandez is an opportunity he’s longed for. Now he seems ready for that opportunity. For Tottenham, the search continues.
Vision from Spain: Has the agreement been a surprise?
Spanish football expert Álvaro Montero told Sky Sports:
“This is a deal that seems extremely close. Barcelona have not denied this story and the reports here in Spain reflect that there is an agreement between the two clubs and the player. Traoré loves the idea of playing for Barcelona again.” .
“It’s extremely surprising given Barcelona’s financial situation. It’s just a loan until next summer with an option to buy, but it’s not mandatory. We also have to remember that Francisco Trincao is also a player for agent Jorge Mendes.
“He is a Barcelona player on loan at Wolves, who have the option to buy the player for €30m. In case Traore plays extremely well and Barcelona want to sign him permanently, maybe Trincao could be the key to him.” that Traore stays beyond July”.
“It would be a special move for Traore and a challenge. You have to remember that he played for Barcelona B and only twice in the first team seven years ago when he was a kid. He was unsuccessful in Spain, but thanks to his performances in England, he was able to get a call-up to Luis Enrique’s Spanish team.
“He would return to a different Barcelona. When he left, the club was all about possession of the ball with Pep Guardiola and Enrique, but now you have to remember that while he is not a typical Barcelona player of the last 10 or 15 years, He is a very physical player who can help Xavi’s current team.”
