Android app changes are being made by YouTube, making it easier for users to select the resolution of their videos. The new video quality controls are more confusing for mobile users to decide which option to choose if they are not concerned about data consumption.

Android Police recently discovered that YouTube replaced the option to individually select the streaming quality of the videos that one is watching. Some generic alternatives only indicate how heavy on data the streaming will be. For example, now users will not get the option to choose between 720p, 1080p, or 4K resolution but will get the options that are supposed to be more “friendly” for non-tech-savvy: higher picture quality, data saver.

The advance menu gives users the option to set the resolution of the video, but changes can be made in the current video. A default video quality for all videos can be set by heading to the Settings > Video quality preferences menu. The default can be set for both mobile networks and Wi-Fi. A specific resolution as a default for all videos can’t be set because the Advanced option isn’t available under the Video quality preferences menu.

Most users who are used to the old setting will not find this new setting useful since there is an extra step to change the video resolution. YouTube wants to make data saving easier. Through a server-side switch, the new settings are enabled.

The new video quality controls are separated for Wi-Fi and mobile data. In different scenarios, mobile users can select their preferences. The streaming resolution of the videos, none of the new options indicate clearly. The user will have to choose a data saver or higher. These new video quality controls are being rolled out on Android and iOS platforms to all YouTube users worldwide. Users will probably notice them soon.
