Birmingham: Brawl breaks out at Tesco store in Ashton

A Tesco security guard is now subject to an internal investigation after shocking footage captured a mass brawl breaking out inside a supermarket between staff and two suspected thieves.

The violent scenes erupted at the superstore when security tried to apprehend a pair of alleged shoplifters on Sunday afternoon, January 9.

Dramatic mobile phone footage shows a Tesco worker at the store in Aston, Birmingham, swinging at one of the suspects as he pleads: “Don’t hit me, I’ve got nothing to do with it.”

The same store bouncer then runs over to another person being grappled by staff and aggressively delivers several heavy “MMA-style” elbows to his back.

The person filming the footage can be heard saying: “It’s getting silly in here. It’s all mad. He’s mashing him up here. Oh s**t.”

Meanwhile, an elderly woman can be seen walking into shot and casually continuing her shopping as the violence breaks out around her.

West Midlands Police confirmed they were called to the superstore on Aston Lane at 3.40pm on Sunday after a Tesco staff member was punched in the face.

The agency security guard involved is now subject of an internal investigation and is not currently working at the store.

One witness, who did not want to be named, said the brawl broke out after security guards stopped two people on suspicion of stealing booze.

They said: “It all got a bit crazy and one of the security guards appeared to be very heavy-handed. He swung for one of the lads and then elbow dropped the other.

“His own colleagues had to pull him off at one point. I’m not sure his bosses are going to be very happy as he clearly lost his temper but I think he got a whack in the face himself.

“At one point one of the fellas tried to bite him as well so you can understand him losing his rag a little but it was still pretty unprofessional of him to react as he did.”

Another wrote: “Thought this Security Guard was supposed to escort him off the premises, not go all MMA on his Ass.”

A third put: “The security guard should not be behaving like that @Tesco why are you employing wannabe gangsters that can’t regulate their emotions when at work?”

However, others praised the security guard’s actions with one writing: “That security guard needs a pay rise.”

Another added: “Little scrotes need teaching a lesson, might make them think twice now in future.”

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We are aware of this incident and are assisting the police with their enquiries.”
