She may have celebrated her milestone 40th birthday – but there was no big party for the Duchess of Cambridge.

She is thought to have spent the day of her birthday yesterday privately with her family having a low-key celebration.

And this could have suited Kate perfectly, who even in her university days wasn’t one for tearing the town up and could apparently nurse one glass of wine all night.

In her book Kate: The Future Queen, royal author Katie Nicholl speaks to an unnamed friend, who joined Kate on a gap year trip to Italy.

The friend claimed: “She’d get giggly and silly after a few glasses, so then she would stop.

“She was never interested in getting really drunk. She wasn’t really a party girl.

“She wasn’t uptight or boring, she was really fun and lovely, but going out and getting wasted wasn’t really her thing.”

But one party she wasn’t able to get out of having was her hen party in 2011, shortly before marrying Prince William.

Kate’s sister Pippa reportedly organised a private do at the house of a friend, with the guest list kept to a minimum.

And it appears Kate let her hair down by donning a racy outfit and channelling popstar Cheryl by singing and dancing to her hit song Fight For This Love.

Writing in her autobiography, Cheryl revealed how she bumped into William backstage at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert in 2012 and he cheekily joked: “Did you know you’ve got a bit of competition?”

According to Cheryl, the couple started giggling before Kate admitted she’d performed the star’s 2009 hit at her hen do.

The former Girls Aloud star writes in her autobiography Cheryl My Story: “Kate confessed that she dressed up as me on her hen night, in a bodysuit and split trousers, and sang Fight For This Love.

“She even learnt the dance routine and was step-perfect by all accounts, as her sister Pippa and brother James also came over and told me all about it.”

However, despite missing out on a big birthday bash, Kate could have a joint 40th party with William later in the year.

The Queen is expected to throw William a party for his own 40th in June, with Windsor Castle or Sandringham among the likely venues.

Similar lavish bashes have previously been thrown to jointly celebrate significant birthdays of several members of the family at the same time.

Back in June 2000, a huge do was held at Windsor to celebrate Prince Andrew’s 40th birthday, Princess Anne’s 50th, Princess Margaret’s 70th and William’s 18th.

Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, said she expects the Queen will play a major role in the planning of the party for William.

Ingrid said: “The Queen is tremendously fond of enjoying such occasions and this would be no different.

“There’s a lot to look forward to in her Platinum Jubilee year, and with both William and Kate turning 40 it’s an extra excuse to celebrate.

“This is a pretty big one for the Cambridges so it should be quite the party.”
