New travel bans and rules are in place due to Omicron

The Omicron variant has seen countries introducing new travel rules and bans for UK travellers, due to concerns over the numbers of cases in the UK.

Germany is the latest country to have announced a ban on Brits, with only German residents and citizens currently allowed to enter from the UK. It follows the footsteps of France who last week announced a ban on Brits visiting for non-essential reasons, including tourism and business.

Other countries such as Italy and Spain have introduced stricter entry rules for Brits, although they are remaining open to holidaymakers. For example, Spain now requires all visitors to be fully vaccinated against Covid, while Italy has brought back mandatory quarantine for unvaccinated arrivals.

As reported by our sister site MyLondon, there are currently nearly 30 countries which are closed to Brits for travel. It’s worth noting that the majority of these have been keeping their borders closed throughout the pandemic, although there have been recent bans put in place due to Omicron.

To make life a little easier we’ve flagged the Omicron-specific ones along with a full list of the countries below.

Germany has introduced a travel ban on Brits due to concerns over the number of Omicron cases in the UK.

Under the new rules in force, only German citizens and residents are currently allowed to travel to Germany from the UK. Regardless of their Covid vaccination status, they will need proof of a negative Covid test, as well as being required to quarantine at home for 14 days.

The restrictions are currently expected to last until at least January 3, 2022, but could be extended.

Japan

Japan closed its borders on November 30 to all foreign nationals who do not have existing resident status in the country, due to concerns over the emergence of the Omicron variant.

France

France has closed to Brits for non-essential travel such as tourism and business. This applies to all UK arrivals, regardless of vaccination status.

Those who have an essential reason can only visit if they are fully vaccinated and have proof of a negative PCR test taken within 24 hours before departure. Upon arrival in France, they are required to self-isolate for 48 hours and take a PCR test where a negative result can release them from quarantine.

Israel

On December 27 Israel announced a ban on the entry of foreigners until further notice, except for people whose entry has been approved by the Exceptions Committee.

Morocco

Morocco introduced a flight ban on November 29 which includes all inbound flights to Morocco. This flight ban was initially due to last for two weeks but this has subsequently been extended to last through to December 31.
