Taking care of your hair is important.

Learning what works with your hair will help you achieve the best results. Curly hair needs differ from straight hair needs. Curly hair needs more moisture than straight hair, while wavy hair remains somewhere in between. Sometimes straight and wavy hair gets weighed down with too much products, or products that don’t work with your hair.

For example, coconut oil works wonders on curly hair but can weigh down straight hair. Product ingredients are important to be mindful of. Ingredients to avoid, especially for curly hair, are sulfates and silicones. Sulfates are harsh detergents used in dish soap and laundry detergent, so why put them in your shampoo and conditioner? Silicones coat the hair and create build-up while preventing moisture from penetrating the hair strands.

Curly hair for example needs much more moisture than other hair types. The pattern in curly hair makes it more difficult for natural oils to reach the midshaft of the hair. Frizz often accompanies curls, a result of the lack of moisture. Hair masks and moisturizing products will help fight frizz. A good defining gel for curly hair will define curls and fight frizz.

Trial and error is effective in finding what products work. Many stores have love it or return it policies, so if you try a product a couple times and don’t like it you can return it. Watching YouTube videos can help you find what other people use that have similar hair types or similar problems.

Preventative measures and protective hairstyles will help prevent breakage. Sleeping with silk or satin pillow cases which will prevent friction that results in breakage of the hair. Another option is sleeping with a satin bonnet or silk scarf to prevent friction against cotton pillowcases. People with straighter hair can sleep in braids to help prevent breakage.
